OVERVIEW Although the 1988 Silver American Eagle is a bullion coin, it is legal United States coinage with a nominal value of one dollar. They are available from bullion and coin dealers in bulk quantities. They charge a premium above the commodities market's fixed ("spot market") price depending on the quantity sold. This is your best bet if you are looking to fill out an investment portfolio with bullion (as opposed to 'paper' silver in the form of Exchange Traded Funds), or if you want to put some precious metal away for "a rainy day". The day to day spot market value of silver usually fluctuates within a narrow range (range-bound), and can be extremely volatile over the long term. Eagles were first issued in 1986 and have been issued every year since. Therefore they also have numismatic value which can far exceed their nominal value as bullion. This price will depend on their age (scarcity) and condition. It is a mistake to think that filling an album with a complete set will be worth more than the individual coins. Other than dealers who break the sets to sell the coins individually, few people will pay a premium for a complete set. 2014 Silver Eagles on eBAY sell at considerably higher prices than the silver dealer's bulk price. Silver Eagles issued between 1986 and a few years prior to the current year of issue sell for far more money. If you are trying to build up a store of silver bullion, this is definitely not the way to do it.Read full review
