This Topps Company baseball card from 1965 features the late great New York Yankees baseball star Mickey Mantle, card number 3 of that year’s set. This vintage card commemorates the 1964 home run leaders in the American League, and also features Harmon Killebrew and Boog Powell. The 1965 Topps baseball cards feature borders with an array of colors, and pennants that note the player’s team. The number 3 card features a red border, but on this card, the pennant says "American League," since it shows the three players mentioned above on the card’s front. The full 1965 Topps card set contains 598 cards, each conforming to Topps’s standard-issue sports cards size, which was 2-1/2 inches by 3-1/2 inches. Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) notes that some of the cards were produced in limited quantity and can be harder to find, especially in higher-graded conditions. In this set, Mickey Mantle also appears on card number 5 (American League RBI Leaders), card number 134 (World Series Game 3 – "Mantle’s Clutch HR"), and his standard solo card, number 350. PSA, which is regarded as the authority on condition grade for sports cards, notes that this Mickey Mantle number 3 card can often command a premium at auctions, as it’s a hot commodity among collectors. The Topps Company first produced baseball cards in 1951. Bowman and Topps fought a bitter war in the baseball card space for a few years, including lawsuits over exclusivity contracts, before Topps purchased Bowman outright in 1956. That purchase paved the way for Topps to lead the market, making their vintage cards highly popular with collectors of baseball memorabilia. Mantle played with the New York Yankees for the entirety of his 18-year baseball career, which started with his rookie season with the team in 1951. He won the league’s MVP award three times, including back to back seasons in 1956 and 1957. Mickey Mantle hit 536 home runs in his baseball career, placing him 18th on the all-time leaderboard. Mantle won seven World Series championships with the Yankees during his career (leading the Yankees to 12 World Series). During the 1961 baseball season, Mantle and teammate Roger Maris chased Babe Ruth’s previous single-season home run record of 60 home runs; Mantle got injured and did not return in time, while Maris hit his 61st home run on the final day of the season. Mickey Mantle remains one of baseball’s most famous players even today for his individual performance and his leadership of championship Yankees teams. This 1965 Topps card commemorates his great sports achievements, and is surely a collector’s item.
