The 1917-D is scarce in circualted grades, more scarce than the 1915-D and 1916-D, though not as scarce as the 1913-D Type 2, 1914-D, and 1918-D. It is rare in Gem condition, about as rare as the other 1913 (Type 2) to 1916 Denver Mint issues (beginning in 1918 and thru 1927, the D Mints get quite a bit rarer in Gem condition.) The 1917-D is usually, but not always, well struck. Luster is usually of the satiny type.
Recently I finished my first date set of Buffalo nickels. I spent many happy hours staring at thousands of coins trying to find suitable specimens in my budget range. What I found was that it was much easier to find nice examples of the really low mintage San Francisco dates like the 13-S TY2 and 21-S or 24S. These coins have a higher profile and demand high prices but there was plenty to choose from if you had the bucks to spend. It was coins like this the 17-D or some of the other early Denver strikes like the 13-D TY2, 14-D, 15-D and 18-D that were some of the last that I acquired. There didn't seem to be as many to select from. Although almost 10 million of the 1917 were made I don't think as many of them were saved as the "Glamour Date" San Francisco coins.

The 1917 D Buffalo Nickel is a sort of semi key date, so is often expensive to get in really good condition. The date on this one is readable enough that acid was not needed to bring it out. The date is a little hard to read due to wear but a good coin that is great to have in my slowly growing collection.

Coin was as defined. Was pretty dark, but, had nice features. Well enough to plug into one of my buffalo nickle books.

Perhaps it's the photo lighting but doesn't look like same coin once received.
