A very consistent grind - I like a fine grind and this does a great job. And I like that it has a fairly large bin to hold the whole beans. Plus there's something about grinding coffee by hand. First of all, it's fresh ground - but it's more than that. It's almost spiritual. I'm personally involved with the cup of coffee I'm about to drink. That's why I like growing a vegetable garden. Sure, I can just go to the store, but my veggies taste better because they are: 1. fresh and 2. I grew them myself. If you are a gardener, you understand.

Hario normally does a great job with its various coffee related products, but this one misses the mark. The burr grinder is good, but the silicone bits don't fit that well (anti slip bottom and top hopper cover), the size of the grinder itself is too unwieldily to fit comfortably in many hand, (i'm only ok, but wife is a no go) and the grind container is glass. While this sounds nice, the glass adds a feeling of "fragility" to the grind experience. i'll just suck it up and continue to use it, but I'm of the opinion that they should have done a much better job on this one. C'mon Hario!

I bought this plus the French press adapter, in order to get a course or grind. It works just fine now that I got it installed, but getting it installed can be a bit tricky because the burrs must be centered and accessing the nuts and screws to adjust it is a pain. However, once that is done it is good. If you have arthritic hands thisprobably will not work for you. If you are bound and determined to have a conical burr grinder you're going to end up having to pay a lot of money for an electric one. Otherwise about 40 bucks for a cheaper flat burr grinder (which doesn't give as consistent a grind and is harder to clean.) If you are just going to use the grinder without the adapter, for a finer grind than french press, you'll probably be fine right out of the box.

Takes approx. 45 min. to grind 3 loads of beans. Grinds consistently and smoothly. Beans don't get stuck and hand mill doesn't create soreness due to repetitive spinning. Overall, consider this method part of a ritual. I'll be grinding beans once to get me through the week, not every morning which would take at least ten minutes each time for 4 Tbs of grounds. Beans and grounds are refrigerated in airtight containers and continue to stay relatively fresh so grinding a larger quantity of beans ahead works for me. The product is well made and a great price for the quality of end results.

I transitioned to this grinder after a cheaper tube-style mill (they're sold all over Amzn for like $12) fell apart in the grinding mechanism. This one is well worth the small increase in cost. The parts are fully metal from the arm down into the connection to the ceramic burr. This should make it much more robust. The glass grind catcher avoids static that can build up from the process. I've yet to need more than a small tap to get all the grounds cleanly out into my press. The grind size can be dialed down to very fine, adequate for espresso. I wouldn't know about Turkish, as I've never used that method, but heard it needs to be even finer. I'm guessing you could get there with this model, but it would take a lot of cranking to get enough grounds. I would not hesitate to buy another of these when/if this one wears out. The instructions mention that after a lot of use, the ceramic burr might become dull enough that you'd want to replace it.Read full review
