Someone had recommended this movie to me for study on slavery and it's effects on people and nations. I was very hesitant to even comment on it as it opened up my eyes to the cruel truth......that slavery is still in many ways, alive and well here today. The names and tactics may have been changed, but none the less, its here. All have a name/number today that presumes is their property, yet these things are claimed to be property of the government. So perhaps we have been deceived just as Solomon was beaten into submission into accepting a name and status he never was? I found this movie very powerful, moving, compelling, and realistic in being able to give a good picture of just how depraved people and their created systems can be when based upon the color of someone's skin and status. The horrors and injustice of being sold, taken from your inheritance and people, separated from your family members, carted off as cattle and forced into carrying a name/names/numbers that were never yours to begin with. All of this created by people who in essence were as animals without honor and took what was not theirs (people) for their own financial gain and enjoyment as the cost of others. The masters in this movie, were nothing more than the lowest reprobates who could not control themselves or their wives, and who had major psychological issues and diseases of the mind, insanity and grandiose. Presuming that creations of God were made for them to be masters over, for the purpose of stealing, raping, and pillaging everything these people had and held dear. The Bible was used as a tool in controlling them, yet this very same collection of many books, was also what made others help some of these slaves. Powerful movie! As always the handsome and well loved Samuel (Brad Pitt), brings into this movie a glimpse of hope, that even during that time in history, there were people of honorable character who saw that all of God's creations were not to be enslaved. A man was like any other man. The laws during that time were horrendous and I could not believe that even though Solomon was a free man, and the atrocities that were committed against him and to others, the guilty were not brought to justice. May this movie help us to see that slavery in any form is never good and eventually any nation/country which allows it to exist will fail due to it abuse of its people. The spirit of mankind is strong and resilient, and freedom to choose and love for one another will be the ultimate challenge for us.............without love, there will always be another system to take the place of the current ones and it will never reach a noble, honorable system, where its people are strong and they are united as one in their purpose of securing life, liberty and property for all. Only chaos can be brought upon peoples/nations if any slavery is allowed and those seeds will eventually come back to bite our butts, as what ever we sow, that shall we reap. Read full review

Very good movie with a slightly different plot line. Yes it's about slavery but it's the slavery story you rarely hear about. The story of an educated, talented, well to do, free black man that lives a good life in the North where slavery isn't aspired to. Until he is kidnapped and transported South and sold into slavery on a cotton plantation for 12 years. A very touching, thought provoking story of the human spirit and its determination and will to not only survive but never give up trying to get back the good in life.
This movie is a true account of one man's experience in America One Hundred and Fifty years ago. The book was written by Solomon Northup, the subject of the film. Hence, the book was a true account of the story. The film was true to the account told in the book. However, the book was so well written by Solomon Northup, that the only way the film could have told the story better than the book, is if Solomon Northup, himself, could have directed the film. I recommend the book with the film as a back-up for those who have trouble reading.
Awesome film, and the best part is that it is based on a true story.... Shows the evil of American antebellum slavery. Tells the story of a kidnapped musician who lived in the North, was lured to Washington DC. and kidnapped there, and sent into slavery. Shows all the horrors until he was able to get free, 12 years later.
