James Cole (Bruce Willis) is a convicted criminal in 2035. He has volunteered as a time traveler and has ventured back in time about 40-50 years in an effort to rescue future mankind. A deadly virus unleashed by a terrorist group known as the "Army of the 12-Monkeys", was unleashed on the human population of the world in the late 1990's. This virus killed practically all of the world's human population, leaving those lucky enough to survive, in dank underground communities. His mission is to try to obtain information about the virus, and possibly obtain a sample of the original virus so that scientists can attempt to develop a cure. If he is successful, he will be pardoned. The crude system of time travel developed in 2035 is dangerous and very imprecise. Cole is also constantly plagued by recurring dreams of a chace and shooting in an airport. On Cole's first trip, he arrives in Baltimore in 1990, not 1996 as planned. He is arrested and hospitalized in a mental institution on the diagnosis of Dr. Kathryn Railly (Stowe). There, he encounters Jeffrey Goines (Pitt), a fellow mental patient with fanatical animal rights and anti-consumerist leanings. Cole tries unsuccessfully to leave a voicemail on a number monitored by the scientists in the future. After a failed escape attempt, Cole is restrained and locked in a cell, but then disappears, returning to the future. Back in his own time, Cole is interviewed by the scientists, who play a distorted voice mail message which gives the location of the Army of the Twelve Monkeys and states that they are responsible for the virus. He is also shown photos of numerous people suspected of being involved with the virus, including Goines. The scientists then send him back to 1996. Cole kidnaps Dr. Railly and sets out to find Goines. When confronted, however, Goines denies any involvement with the virus and suggests that wiping out humanity was Cole's idea, originally broached at the asylum in 1990. Cole vanishes again as the police approach. After Cole disappears, Railly begins to doubt her diagnosis of Cole when she finds evidence that he is telling the truth, including a photograph from World War I in which Cole appears. Cole, on the other hand, convinces himself that his future experiences are hallucinations, and persuades the scientists to send him back again. Railly attempts to settle the question of Cole's sanity by leaving a voice mail on the number he provided, creating the message the scientists played prior to his second mission. They both now realize that the coming plague is real, and make plans to enjoy the time they have left. On their way to the airport, they learn that the Army of the Twelve Monkeys is a red herring; all the Army has done is delay traffic by releasing all the animals in the zoo. At the airport, Cole leaves a last message telling the scientists they are on the wrong track following the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, and that he will not return. He is soon confronted by Jose (Jon Seda), an acquaintance from his own time, who gives Cole a handgun and instructions to complete his mission. At the same time, Railly spots the true culprit behind the virus: Dr. Peters (David Morse), an assistant at the Goines virology lab. Peters is about to embark on a tour of several cities around the world, which matches the sequence (memorized by Cole) of viral outbreaks. While fighting through security, Cole is shot as he tries to stop Peters. He dies in Railly's arms.Read full review
An awesome Sci-Fi film, Willis is amazing Bruce Willis is spectacular in this futuristic thriller. Twelve Monkeys is about a scientist who goes back in time to try and stop the release of a toxin in the air that caused the demolition of man kind. Bruce Willis is the main character but the supporting cast is so superb that even if Willis was replaced with a chimp this movie still would've rocked. Brad Pitt throws down a spectacular performance as the leader of an enviromental group known as the 12 Monkeys. Overall this is one of my favorite Sci-Fi films of all time, it's innovative, creative, and tons of fun. I didn't like this movie the first time I saw this back in '96, but after watching it a couple years ago I had to buy it, and now I watch it routinely. Final Verdict: 5/5 Rent or Buy?: If you love Bruce Willis, you'll love this film. Although I'd recommend renting it first though, if you're not a huge sci-fi fan, just in case. IF YOU FIND THIS REVIEW HELPFUL PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE. Thank you.Read full review
This film had been directed by Terry Gilliam, who faced challenges from its studio before and won. The film is science fiction in a not gimmicky kind of sci-fi. The film features Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt in the same movie sometimes sharing the same scene together. Plus, James, Bruce's character, has to engage in time travel in order to save the future. And Madeline Stowe's character is not a token female character. Sci-fi fans and the curious need apply.
