If one is looking for skull thumping base from a set of headphones, then these are not for you. If, however, one is seeking tonal clarity and solid definition, then you have come to the right place. While the AKG K701s are not particularly powerful, they deliver when it comes to definition and staging of sound. The highs and mids are tonally accurate without being overly bright and the lows are not muddy at all. In fact one seldom finds a pair of headphones where the bass frequencies are this well defined. Once these cans are broken in, they offer an editing experience like few others at this price point, so I can say with confidence that I heartily recommend the AKG K701 to anyone who is editing music in their private collection, or for those who are seeking a listening experience that is not colored by artifacts.Read full review

It is the model with non removable cable and that is the only negative side on this model. Very comfy. The drawback of open back is also that the room you are mixing in HAS to be somewhat quiet. Not as much as the recording booth but still pretty quiet.

There is virtually no noise cancellation, which I thought would be good for recording a vocalist, but the metronome or track from the headphones bleeds into the microphone at an unacceptable level. The sound of the headphones is ok, the high end can be somewhat brittle and the low end is almost nonexistent. So while they're not ideal mixing headphones, they at least provide a different, interesting perspective. I've never heard headphones quite like it, and that's a nice change of pace. They would make a nice second pair of headphones.

I was upgrading from a pair of Sennheiser HD280s. These were used for recording as well as mixing. I purchsed the K701 strictly for mixing. WOW. I can notice small details that were quite a bit harder to pick up on the Sennheisers which have helped me fine tune my mixes (When not using monitors). They completely encapsulate the ear so your ears aren't in pain when you remove them. Being that they are open back, there is less boominess and resonance in the ear piece and your ears don't get fatigued as quickly.
