Dooney & Bourke Collection VINTAGE AWL Tack Bags PHOTOS

Dooney & Bourke started their business in 1975 when Peter Dooney and Frederic Bourke launched their namesake in South Norwalk, Connecticut.  They started with two notable introductory products: the Surcingle Belts with were popular because of the vibrant colors and stripes and the Classic Suspenders. The classic suspenders became widely popular thanks to the movie "Chariots of Fire"

In 1981 Dooney & Bourke branched out into the handbag business with the creation and release of the Tack Case and the Equestrain Bag.  The original distributors were Nordstrom, Sacks Fifth Avenue and Brooks Brothers. The Company Store in Norwalk Connecticut also sold their Dooney & Bourke merchandise.

In 1983 Dooney & Bourke developed their famous ALL WEATHER LEATHER (AWL). The first AWL bags were completely  pebbled leather called "Self Trimmed"  with the famous oval leather duck logo.

The ALL WEATHER LEATHER (AWL) is 100% waterproof cowhide, water shed off the bags like water off a duck.

Tanning process from the Dooney & Bourke catalogs:

"The Essence of All Weather Leather"

The secret lies in the tanning process. First, our dies are soaked in curing tanning oils and laid to out to dry. As the leather shrinks, its pores tighten and close - this creates a natural barrier to moisture.  And gives all weather leather its distinctive pebbled grain texture. The result is leather that's soft and supple to the touch, yet virtually impervious to the elements. There's no need to pamper it with wax or silicone . A simple solution of bar soap and water is sufficient to remove most dirt and water soluble stains.

The first released handbags were the Tack Case and the Equestrain Bag, both made from BRIDLE LEATHER in 1981 and 1982!.

1981 Tack bags had the rectangle brass DB hanging fob, NO cloth label sewn inside only DB Dooney Bourke embossed on the thin leather pocket inside.

Fall 1981-Spring 1982 Tack & Equestrain Leather bags, Wool/Cloth Leather trim bags and Leather Alligator bags had the rectangle brass DB hanging fob, NO cloth label sewn inside, DB Dooney Bourke embossed on the thin leather pocket inside!   Summer 1982 DB Dooney Bourke Made in USA embossed on the thin leather pocket inside!

1982
Tack & Equestrain bags had the round DB hanging fob, there were NO cloth label sewn inside and NO DB embossed letters!  Both had inside pockets made of thin all leather.

Fall 1982 Tack & Equestrain bags had the round DB hanging fob and the LARGE GREEN CLOTH label sewn on the thin leather pocket inside.

1983 released their famous All-Weather Leather (AWL) handbag collection featuring the leather duck logo! These first AWL TACK bags were ALL pebbled leather even the duck logo!

1983 Early 1983 there were no cloth labels sewn on the inside thin leather pocket!
