A Nintendo Classic: The GameCube

Nintendo is known as a video game pioneer. With new consoles and exclusive games consistently hitting the market, they are a leader in the video game world for family-friendly fun. With the steady influx of new systems and new games, the market is becoming overwhelmed, and older, now-classic systems such as the GameCube are phased out to make room for the new video game consoles to take reign.

History of the GameCube

The GameCube console was first released in Japan, Nintendo's home country, in September of 2001. It was released in November of the same year for the North America market and later in 2002 for the European market. The GameCube originally came packaged with a single game controller and had two memory card slots on which players could save their games. The memory cards were available in three different sizes: 512 kilobytes, two megabytes, and eight megabytes. Even though the game console had mixed reviews from fans and struggled through its lifetime, the system sold over 21 million units worldwide. Some games for the Nintendo GameCube include:

  • Mario Sunshine
  • Mario Kart: Double Dash
  • Animal Crossing
  • Luigi's Mansion
  • The Simpsons: Hit & Run

Are GameCubes still sold in stores?

In the end, the console did make a lasting impression with players around the world but was discontinued in 2007 with its final game made in August of that year. Some video game stores accepted trade-ins or purchased used consoles from customers up until as late as 2012. They may still have used consoles available to be purchased, but quantity is extremely limited. The most likely place to find the console is online from an internet retailer.

How hard is it to find a GameCube for sale?

Since the GameCube was discontinued more than 10 years ago, finding a console in good condition is difficult. They are now seen as a collectible item, along with the games, but are still priced pretty fairly. eBay would most likely have multiple systems in various conditions available for purchase directly from another consumer since the game console is no longer being manufactured. With online platforms for buying and selling video games and gaming equipment, there is also a likelihood of being able to purchase the video console with a game, multiple games, or other gaming equipment like controllers or memory cards included in your purchase since you are buying directly from another consumer.
