I ruined one seal installing it without this tool.

I used this tool to size the seal first by lubricating the seal and inserting the tool through the seal from the front side. That kept the teflon lip from cracking and wanting to push outward when installing the seal. The teflon lip broke on the first seal I installed without the tool. The lip is con-caved toward the compressor and has a tendency to push outward when slipping over the shaft. The tool also prevents cutting the seal on the flats of the shaft.
