Charger gets extremely hot and guage is vaugue

I connected it to a brand new battery that was used to crank a starter a few times it did seem to charge and the light came on to indicate a shutoff but while charging gets extremely hot every forum I read told me if it doesn't cool down that it's defect so now I'm lost and nobody has commented how hot theirs got ?
