For FM Radio Reception, Not for Phone Reception
The other review talks about phone calls. That's not what this antenna is for. It's for listening to FM radio stations. The actual description of the item is probably responsible for the misunderstanding.
Most people don't realize this but almost all smart phones have FM radio tuners. You need special apps to use the tuners and some carriers or firmware providers lock up this feature so you can't access the FM tuners even with the appropriate app. (I had Verizon disable my FM tuner access with an older phone with a software update.)
Anyway, I am able to use the FM tuner in my current phone. However, these phones don't have built-in antennas for the FM tuners. The use the headphone cable as an antenna. However, I often use a Bluetooth antenna, which has no cable, so I have to take another pair of earbuds and have them hang off the headphone jack just to act as an antenna.
I bought this antenna so I could have a more compact antenna when listening to the radio. This one does work, sort of; however, there are five problems: (1) This antenna is at an awkward angle; so it sticks out from the phone. (2) This antenna is not flexible, it's rigid. (3) Not only is it rigid, it's fragile; when I did try to bend it, it cracked on the inside. (4) Because it's rigid and sticks out, it can easily be pushed by things, which then torques the plug which can cause the connection to be bad or, worse, can damage the phone's jack. (5) It doesn't seem to make a good connection with my phone anyway: my FM radio app often complains that something needs to be plugged into the headphone jack even when this antenna is actually plugged in.
Regarding item (4) above, the plug does pivot a little, which somewhat mitigates the torquing of the jack. It would still be better if the whole thing was flexible.
So, despite these complaints, it still works somewhat; so I give it three stars (maybe I should give it two). If it was easy to find things that did not have the problems I have listed above, I would have rated it lower. It's also cheap. What is really needed is an antenna that is at more of a right angle and that is flexible (like a whip antenna on a walkie-talkie), especially at the bend or near the plug.
So, in summary:
Pros:
- Cheap
- Does work somewhat.
- Does have a little play in the plug, which protects the jack from torque.
- Can't find a better alternative.
Cons:
- Awkward Angle
- Not flexible
- Fragile
- Does still torque the jack a little.
- Doesn't seem to always make a good connection with the jack.
