I purchased this GPS after I broke the screen on my Garmin GPS because I had heard good things about TomTom. I planned to use it on vacation in an unfamiliar state. I want to emphasize my review has nothing to do with the seller, just the unit itself and I was not impressed at all with this unit. Here were my major gripes-
Unlike my Garmin, this unit did not let you know far enough in advance you needed to turn or exit until a few hundred yards before the intersection/exit. A few hundred yards notice is fine on a quiet 2 lane rural road, but not so fine doing 65 down the freeway in heavy traffic when you're in the far left lane. I missed quite a few exits because I could not safely get over in time.
Even if you let it "warm up" it didn't seem to be able to calculate which way you needed to turn out of parking lots to get to the next destination. The arrow may be pointing one direction, you turn in that direction, then the unit takes you on a big loop to get back on that road in the opposite direction. That was pretty annoying and wasted gas/time.
There were lots of totally useless features (changing the voice, map color, car color ect...), which is fine, but when the most important features are difficult to use, all this fluff is aggrevating. They needed to spend more time focusing on the functionality and user friendliness and less on having 15 different car icons to choose from.Read full review...
Overall, good unit for the money. A few glitches, but I would recommend.
TomTom is one of the most widley know names in GPS devices. This unit comes with some very nice features. The display is fully adjustable, which is great! You can even change map colors to help with clear viewing. Also, the option to change the voice is great as well. Sometimes it is easier to hear a woman talk over a man when going down the highway at 70 mph. The unit is lightweight and looks great on the windshield. The amount of custom options are great. You can adjust everything from voice, color, display, preferences, navigation options and you can choose what POI you want displayed in the menu, very nice!
Only a couple gripes. One, the touch screen is not as responsive as it should be. You sometimes have to press the icon on the screen multiple times before it registers. Some of the menu option can be confusing as well. You have to slide the main screen over multiple times to access some general info and changes. Can be very difficult to navigate this when you are traveling. Lastly, if you shut the unit down and power it up 50 miles away from you last location, it takes several minutes for the unit to find a satellite and determine position.Read full review...
I bought this after a ton of research on other navigation systems in the same price range. This one got glowing reviews and I didn't need the navigation system to do anything more than have text-to-speech and accurate maps so I didn't think I was going to be disappointed. When I received it, I plugged it into my computer and updated the map. This was fast and easy. All that left to do was to test it out. This is when I was disappointed. The Tomtom did NOT say the names of streets. I have read other places that this is just a setting that needs to be enabled, but I cannot figure out where it is in the Tomtom and no manual comes with the product - you have to find one on the Tomtom website and I still can't find out how to fix this problem. Also, I passed a few turns because of the confusing timing of the alert to turn. I found myself having to ignore the voice and just watch the map which was annoying and probably not so safe. I considered that this might be because this is my first navigation system but then I remembered that I have no problem with the Google Maps navigation on my cell phone (T-mobile G1).
Honestly, I was hoping that if I got this navigation system I would be able to downgrade my cellular service and save some money. It is sad that the navigation system on my phone is SO much better. Faster, more accurate and efficient maps, speaks the street names, MUCH more intuitive software navigation, more responsive touch screen and I can search for an address on it. The latter is something that I thought the Tomtom would be able to do and it sadly is not. It is annoying and antiquated that one must know the addresses of everywhere they want to go in order to have the Tomtom take them there. If I go to a store and they don't have what I need but a salesperson suggests another store, I then have to find out the address of that store instead of just being able to search for it on the Tomtom. This thing is like something out of the Flintstones compared to my phone. The only plus I can think of is that its speaker is super loud. Unfortunately that's not enough for me.Read full review...
Overall I'm happy..especially for what I paid.
Bad: Attaching and removing the device from the suction cup device is not an easy task...very frustrating. Once it's in place, it's pretty fantastic.
Good: Everything else..very easy to use. Very customizable. My neighborhood is relatively new and the map are up to date..I was very happy about that for my old gps didn't have my neighborhood.Read full review...
