Action, Suspense, Wonderful Music with Wonderful Settings and Plot

This 1959 movie stars Cary Grant as Roger Thornhill, a New York advertising executive, who is mistaken as a CIA agent on the trail of government secret thief, Philip Vandamm (James Mason). The movie has been redone on this dvd in digital format. The movie itself seems very crisp, and the music background is wonderful.

If you have never seen this movie, you need to. It is the dawn of the James Bond age, but in a different way. Full of action, suspense, and romance, we follow Roger as he tries to find out what is going on as the plot leads him in a Northwest pattern.

In a special feature companion to the dvd, we learn that Alfred Hitchcock wanted to do a movie about Mount Rushmore and the United Nations. Thus the screenplay around these two setting was scripted by Ernest Lehman.

The feature shows how he picked his cast, which at first included James Stewart. It also has a conversation with Hitchcock's daughter, Patricia, who tells Alfred's background and personality characteristics. The final choice as female lead, Eva Marie Saint hosts the special feature.

This movie was nominated for 2 Academy Awards--Best Screenplay (Ernest Lehman) and Best Color Art Direction. However, it won none. Nevertheless, it is now classified on the 100 best American Films list, judged by the American Film Institute.

You will thoroughly enjoy this movie!

Good movie. But then again, that's why I bought it. Not in the habit of buying items I don't want

Hitchcock IS the master of suspense!

Having been born in the early 1950's, my Alfred Hitchcock experiences began with Psycho(which I did not see at the movie theater) and ended with Family Plot his last film. With the exception of a PBS showing once in a while, I was pretty ignorant to Mr. Hitchcock's earlier films. So I decided to begin a collection.

North by Northwest is probably the best of a collection of great movies. It has romance, action, and suspense. The charaters are believable and the acting is first rate. Even special effects and movie sets hold up to many of todays standards. Special features are interesting and add to the viewing experience by adding insite regarding the Man and his movie.

Younger viewers might even be surprised at the overall quality of this and other Hitchcock movies. Makes me want to go see Mount Rushmore.

One of the best movies ever!

What is there to say about this movie that has not already been said? That the cast is brilliant, the suspense tangible, the direction and writing fantastic? Well OK then, I think all of that and more.

If you are not old enough to remember this or if you have always meant to watch this movie, do it. This is my 3rd copy of this movie, I have given one away and worn one out. The long and short of it is this; you can't beat Hitchcock on this one.

Great price and works perfectly for not being new!

I purchased North By Northwest as a birthday present for my mom who loves Hitchcock movies. There was nothing wrong with the disk at all and it plays like any other DVD should. Not to mention it was such a great price!Read full review...

Great Story & Great Cast

I am a movie collector and a friend recommended this. It is an incredible mystery that will keep your attention. A great cast acting out a great story.

North by Northwest

Cary Grant, what can I say! He is the best and the movie takes him to the top, a very suspenseful movie with a lot of thrill and action. It is one of the best classic movie that was made. I love it.
