Nikons cream of the crop

There isn’t a lens a lens that is just perfect at every single scenario.... but this one comes pretty close!

It is a tank. Super well built, so it can’t take a lot of damage. It is also super precise if you have to use the zoom ring and it simply always works! The focus is very fast and precise.

Picture quality is pretty close to perfect. It almost performs as good as a prime, and it is sharp corner to corner. A bit of distortion if that concerns you, but the best part about this lens is its constant output. The pictures look sharp regardless of focal length or aperture setting. That makes it very reliable, especially for a professional photographer.

Yes it is a bit bulky.... only if you compare it to other lenses of its same focal length, but a small price you have to pay for the reliability of this lens. Speaking of low price, although this lens was overpriced at the beginning, since the release of the VR version, this one has dropped in price dramatically and for what I heard it is not as good as this one ;-)

You won’t be disappointed if you don’t mind spending the money on it. It’s also a phenomenal travel lens

Excellent zoom lense

1. Durable metal structure with sophisticated craft
2. Excellent focus speed and accuracy
3. Versatile for multiple purposes with good sharpness

1. Comparing with 24-70 from other manufacturers such as Canon and Tamron, the sharpness of this lens decays more significantly from center to edges.
2. Not good at Distortion and Vignette control
3. No VR

Although Nikon has already published second generation 24-70 with useful new feature "VR" and some tech specs of this lens are outdated, I still highly recommend the old one rather than the new one. Actually I didn't see any dramatic promotion but bigger size, more weight and plastic structure in the exchange of "VR". With all due respect, I don't think new 24-70 is a proper "Marketing Positioning" for zoom products.
All in all, it is a cost effective "multi-function" zoom lens to have in ur bag. And if u don't understand what is "multi-function" and keep asking questions like" Is it as good as a 50mm prime lens, I will definitely recommend u to go back to learn from the beginning...

Not Impressed!

I have an AF-S 24-120 VR, it does not perform very well in low lighting, but takes very sharp images in well lighted environment and it has some extra zooming; perfect for outdoors! 24-70 has faster focusing and quality is okay for three times the cost! I still love my 24-120 for outdoors! I will use 24-70 for indoors and close up shots!Read full review...

For serious photographers

This lens is a must have for any serious photographer with a higher end DSLR. The pictures from this lens come out tack sharp and clean. Photo gallery quality! Very durable, and can be used for most shooting needs. The zoom from 24 to 70 is plenty for most applications. It's not the lightest lens in my bag, but I prefer a heavy, durable lens over a flimsy light one. If you ever thought about getting this lens, think no more. This is a must have!Read full review...

Nikkor Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 af-s G SWM Hard to beat this lens!!!!

This lens was purchased as an upgrade to my Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70mm f/2.8 lens for my DX bodies and I do not regret spending one penny of the $1k plus for it. The obvious things like the f/2.8 makes it hard to beat and to me, it is the "New Street Sweeper." Originally the Nikon 24-120mm was given that title by photojournalist and street shooters because it covered the full rang of all that you needed from a Wide Angle to a Medium telephoto. This is produces clean, clear, images that are in some cases sharper than you really want. Because I carry multiple bodies with me, this one is usually attached to either the D2X or the D300 body. With the addition of either one of my Singh-Ray or B&W filters, there are few wasted shots. Indoors, outdoors, nature, sports, or event, it is the lens to have in your bag or on your body. The added value to this lens is that I can move it from any of my DX bodies to one of my FX bodies and there is no compromise in the results. I have a number of favorite Nikon lenses and this one is among them. The 70-200mm f/2.8 VR, the DC AF 105mm f/2, the 17-35mm af-s f/2.8 and the original 85mm af-d f/1.4 are all in my arsenal and either on a body or close at hand regardless of the job.

Secret: I knew going in that this lens had the potential of costing me close to $2k for a new one so, I went out and rented one for seven (7) days to determine if I wanted to go into hock for one of these. After day two (2) the decision was made and I decided to eat cold beans from a can for a couple of months to afford one of these beasts. In hindsight, I would do it again but, much sooner.
