garmin nuvi 660 gps
after doing research on gps unit's, I decided to go with the garmin nuvi 660. this gps unit is also a mp3 player, has blue tooth, and real time traffic. I'll be moving back east in the next few months, so will need help that online mapping cannot possibly provide. I have already used this unit on little week end jaunts, and on fire calls (I'm a Volunteer Fire Fighter). I have already had contact with the garmin company, and have been very happy at how quickly they responded. Their follow-up is awesome so far. I would have no problem with recommending this gps or one of garmin's other products. As anyone can tell you, customer service is huge. If I can't get help with just simple things, then I know that I can write off anything major. Garmin has both the product and customer service. Garmin 660 Review A-
Love the GPS and the endless cool features it has(Have the nuvi 660 w/2009 map)
Pros: The external antenna keeps reception indoors or outdoors, easy to use as with most Garmin GPS, The traffic function if set up is awesome (saved me from a couple jams), Bluetooth is fun (reads text messages to you) and so is audible book (reads books to you ex: bible, etc; free trials are givin but you pay afterwards). The sound on MP3 is good and fm transmitter is nice feature too. Text to Speech says the street name to turn on in stead of just turn in 200ft which is safer than staring at the gps trying to find the street name.
Cons: I also have a nuvi 205w too and though they almost look the same, the 205w is more accurate when passing a street, the 660 car icon is a little laggy in comparison. The voice in the 660 is too robotic for my taste ( still understandable though), and the FM transmitter like many have too much static to understand what is coming out of the speakers (no matter what station you put on in the different places I have tried using it). Oh, and one thing that is awesome in the 205w that the 660 does not have is something called a "Speed Limit Indicator", yes- both mention what speed the car is driving at, but the 205w says what the maximum speed limit is on every major road (super nice feature I wish the 660 had).
Overall the 660 is a nice GPS, and if you find it $350 or less thats a fair price in my opinion.Read full review...
This product gets two thumbs up with me
After searching for the perfect GPS, my wife and I settled on this one. We like the size of the screen. Also, being bluetooth, MP3, and JPEG equipped makes it that much better and give it an edge on the competition. For someone who is serious about buying this item, shop around. We looked all over:(on-line, retailers, etc) and saw that the prices ranged from $300(ebay)- $1200 (Dick's sporting goods). Luckily ebay had the right price. Also, the refurbished ones are selling for the same price as the new ones so BEWARE. Anyway, the navigational aspect of it is better than most but not the best. We were in Wichita and were on older roads but they were not present in the 2008 version of the software. Also, a few times I missed a turn, and it took forever to recalculate. Then that recalculation took me way out of the way. All the rest of the times it worked great. I just arrived in D.C. and look forward to trying it out here, in this traffic. Another cool feature is that you can change your vehicle on the monitor. You can choose anything from a plain red arrow, a paper airplane, school bus, cop car, Tank, RV, Go-Cart, etc. I've messed with other brands and this unit is better than those, so quit looking around and go get your hands on one of these. Easy to use and very accurate
It's so easy to input destination locations and find nearby businessess. I had previously had a GPS navigation tool on my phone but it was inconvenient because if a call came in, then my navigation tool would be stopped. Also, if I was out of range on the phone, then I couldn't get directions. The Garmin Nuvi is reliable and fast when I need it. It has a good battery life too. The system does not really say street names when it gives directions which is something that I expected (it could be a feature I haven't learned to operate).Read full review...
Garmin nuvi 660 Car GPS Receiver
I purchased the Garmin nuvi 660 unit primarily because it was the same type of GPS I had rented with past rental cars and I prefer the wide screen views. While have not used the MP3 player, or photo album, the feature that speaks the name of the streets in turn buy turn directions is particularly helpful. I had not used the traffic antenna with previous Garmins, but I found the updates to current traffic conditions and the ease of altering routes a godsend. I also purchase a vent mount for the unit from ebay which allows the GPS to sit center console in the car. I found it less distracting that the suction cup mounts on the windshield.
The Garmins are easy to use and essential for trips to unfamiliar cities. I find being able to look up locations for: types of food or shopping and entertainment/sports centers with just a few touches of the screen, quite liberating. However I must admit that I have not used any other brand of GPS. While the Garmins are a bit pricey, I was please with what I paid on ebay.
My only complaint is that even with the pre-loaded 2008 maps, there were a couple of instances in my last two week trip where changes to local roads seemed to confuse the machine and caused it to recalculate continuously. Fortunately, I could easily determine the proper direction by road signs and this was not a major problem. I would rate the unit’s accuracy at 90-95%.Read full review...
2 trips cross-country, 10,000 miles, quick review.
I've owned a Garmin Nuvi 680 for 1 year and logged around 10,000 miles on it. I purchased it for 2 drives cross-country this past fall. The first being from VA to CO to WA, and the second from VA to NY to ND to WY and ending in WA.
These were 2 very, very long drives and I must say I was exceedingly impressed with the performance of the Garmin.
Here is a quick summary of my experience:
Pros-
1 Easy to use.
2 Accurate GPS w/ quick start up.
3 Easily understood voice commands.
4 Reliable thus far.
5 Very solid build - Survived a couple falls b/c of mounting system.
6 Incredible peace of mind when in the middle of no-where.
Cons-
1 Some mistakes in mapping (can be updated for a fee online).
2 Battery time not 7 hours as advertised (3-4 hours max).
3 Windshield suction mount will fall off on a hot day & possibly damage unit.
4 Screen is a little small if you have big hands.
The bottom line is this is the best brand in GPS right now. If you are looking for a very small (about 1 inch thick) and portable unit then you should buy this thing. I feel it is worth every penny. If however, you don't mind a larger unit or if you have big hands then you should really consider a unit with a larger touch screen.

I like my Nuvi 660
I got my Nuvi 660 about a week ago and have been playing with it for the last few days. The unit is really easy to use with a big clear display that you can see well even in full sunlight. I will only highlight some of my observations/frustrations. Since I am in the Gatineau, Quebec area the 660 is really comical in the speech of French names when using it in English. Also, street names are preceded by rue(street), chemin(road), etc. and the 660 cannot find the addresses. I also found that I have to enter the exact format and spelling to find addresses, ex: mount xxxx could not be found until I looked at another map on my PC and found it was shown as Mt. xxxx. The FM option is not too reliable and lost the signal often no matter how many times I re-tuned the FM frequency. You really need to be very close to the car antenna for good reception. One other observation, since I have been handling the unit often to input information, I found myself shutting off the 660 inadvertently as the position of the power switch is at the corner where I tend to hold the unit. I am happy with the 660 but since it is my first experience with a GPS unit I can't really comment on what it does better then other units on the market as this is my first car GPS.Read full review...
Good Unit when I replaced it
I really like the Garmin. I purchased it as a refurb off ebay, afterall the price was right. The good thing was that the warantee was also good on it as a refurb. I recieved the unit in decent condition, and the navigation worked well after I updated the maps. Bluetooth would not enable, so after 5 emails with Garmin tech support, I recieved a RMA# and sent it in for a replacement Refurb. All works well. The Bluetooth system does work, but sound quality is below par so trying to use it as a hands free cell device is nearly a lost cause. Also the unit has to be on top of an antenna to use the FM feature. Bottom line: If you want a Navi unit the works well as a Navi Unit, this Garmin is a great investment. If you want hands free cell use, buy something that is originally designed for just that. Same goes for the FM xmtr. Buy a good CD player or Satellite Radio as this unit doesn't sample that kool aid very well.Read full review...

Good little GPS
The Nuvi 660 is very easy to use, pretty good map coverage and list of "points of interest". I was able to find most places with no problem.
However, my maps are a little out of date (not the GPS's fault), so I need to get an updated version.
The unit itself works very well, the Bluetooth integration is cool, and I like the ability to store and play my own music. This is especially handy for use on my motorcycle.
