figgiegj -- Standage's "draft" is truly refreshing!

One will never think of most "drinks" in the same way after reading Standage's excellent book. His chronicle of the world's favorite libations is historical and very in depth -- revealing much of the social and political forces that influenced just what the average "joe or jane" was reaching for on a daily basis (throughout the eons) to quench his thirst or to help get her through their day. This is fun, lighter reading for any lover of historical or social books -- I liked it and also learned a lot from it...though I did find myself craving a good drink more than once while I was reading it!

Yours, Figgiegj in Colorado

Excellent Book

World history is, at best, an intimidating subject. This book distills core themes using the motif of six beverages that have changed the world, like beer, wine, whiskey, and Coca Cola. It is a really superior and fun read for, in particular, the high school or college student who might feel overwhelmed by the subject. As a teacher, I also highly recommend it as summer reading, although you will want to make it clear to students and parents that there are many alcohol references and have an alternative ready to counter any objections to subject matter. Enjoy!Read full review...

Ties together well drinks and broader themes of history

Looks at familiar history but in a new way, from the beverages. Has one of the best summaries of coffee houses, London 1650s, and tea-slave trade connections. A well done, satisfying read.

More than a history

Am excellent book! The facts are outside the main stream of historians. An interesting perspective over the history closer to day by day reality. There are many things to understand and facts from the real history that might be extracted from here, rather than aristocratic facts. Good for those who like to read, both relaxing book for vacation and history book. Excellent references to this book can be done in day to day life in discussions wit friends during dinners.Read full review...

GREAT READ FOR ALL LEVELS OF READERS OF HISTORY

A really good read for all. I usually read much more in depth types of history books, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. perfect for the reader of history who doesn't want it too heavy. Funny in parts and full of new facts on something you would think was so insignificant as tea.

Recommended for all.
