Syracuse NY's greatest business success sstory is the Joseph G. Kren Bat Company.
Kren, an Austrian Immigrant primed the company & produced more than 5 million bats, swung by everyone from sandlot stars, minor leaguers & a who's who of the game’s most famous sluggers, including Honus Wagner, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth and Rogers Hornsby.
“When Babe Ruth bangs out another home run,” the Syracuse Herald reported in 1927, “& the stands go wild its oftenest perhaps a Syracuse-made bat behind the ball.
Accidental success!?
Joseph Kren emigrated to Syracuse from Vienna in 1887 & worked as a carpenter with the Butler Manufacturing Company. He worked on some of the city’s most famous buildings, including the Bastable Theater, the downtown Dey Brothers DEPT store & the Yates Hotel.
He fell in love with baseball & started making bats for local children during his lunch breaks.
The reputation of his hand-crafted bats began to spread in baseball circles and the rest is history, THE BRAND IS BACK!
