Starting in 1985, when Michael Jordan was in his rookie year in the NBA, Nike began producing the Air Jordan line. These shoes started with the Jordan 1s, which are now famous for their lack of the iconic Jumpman logo. For the sake of reproducing this aesthetic for people with smaller feet, Nike released the Retro 1 Grade School sneakers that use the same materials but fit better for children. These are often referred to as GS Jordans, and those with slender or small feet tend to find these very useful for embracing that Jordan style.

What Makes Retro 1 Grade School Different From the Jordan 1?

retro 1 gradeschool shoesThe Retro 1 Grade School sneaker starts at smaller sizes than the standard Jordan 1. Jordan 1 and later variations tend to begin at a men’s size seven, which can be large on children and adolescents. The Grade School line starts at U.S. size 3.5 Y, which is short for youth.

Since these were designed for smaller feet, there are some noteworthy changes from the standard Jordan 1s. When comparing Jordan 1s to Retro 1 Grade Schools, you’ll notice that the part of the upper not covered by the leather strap. This is apparent when looking at the shoes from both the sides and the back. Additionally, the leather on the strap doesn’t have the same texture that Jordan 1s have.

Jordan 1 Features Left Intact

  • Perforated Toe Upper: Jordan 1s are known for the circular pattern of perforations over the toes. This allows for breathability and better moisture wicking. These are made of leather and are present beneath the leather toe cap.

  • Distinct Heel Cap: The heel cap or heel counter is very prominent on all Jordan 1 variations. It extends from the heel up to where the high-top section begins, which is right under where both sides of the Swoosh logo meet at the center of the shoe. Many Jordan 1s feature this component as a separate color.

  • Ankle Support: The iconic high-top aspect of the regular Jordan 1 remains in the Retro 1 Grade School. The upper section protects the heels and ankles by adding more support. The leather ankle strap at the top features two eyelets and rises at a pronounced angle.

  • Flat Rear Sole: Unlike walking shoes and the rears of the Jordan 1 AJKO line, the Jordan 1 and Jordan 1 Grade School both have flat rear soles. This is designed to give the wearer higher traction at the heel since there’s more contact in this part of the shoe when pivoting.

  • The Jordan 1 Sole: Similar to the classic run, the soles of the GS feature a single middle circle with concentric circles expanding to the edges of the shoe. There are also angled lines around the midfoot and curved, traction-friendly lines around the rear foot.
