The Guava Ice Sneaker Marks Union's Second Collab With Jordan
Union Los Angeles is a popular streetwear company known for its hoodies, hats, and other garments. Starting in 2018, they began designing shoes with Nike. The original Union x Jordan collaborations consisted of classic Jordan 1s with Union LA branding.
After this successful collaboration, Union LA was ready to try something new. In 2020, they announced a new line of Jordan shoes. This collection, which included the Guava Ice colorway, was a big departure from past models in both silhouette and colorway options. Instead of sticking to traditional styles, Jordan let Union LA put its own spin on the shoes. Released in August 2020, the Union Guava Ice sneaker was one of the most colorful Union x Jordan collabs of its time.
What Makes the Union Guava Ice so Special?
The Union Guava Ice was the very first Jordan 4 to have a folded-over tongue. Typical versions of the basketball sneaker have a high, rounded tongue with a Jordan tag on the inside. For their design, Union chose to fold the tongue over and stitch it in place. This creates a square, short tongue that is very unusual. The stitching is intentionally temporary, so users can choose to remove the stitches and revert to the old shape if desired.
The other detail to look out for is the translucent, solid wings. Jordan 4s usually have a triangle lace wing support with a cutout middle. The Union Guava Ice shoes skip the cutout and leave the wing as a solid panel. Instead of being solid plastic, the whole unit is made from frosted, translucent plastic. This clear plastic shows the yellow Union LA logo tag underneath the wing.
Learn How the Union Guava Ice Got Its Name
The Guava Ice Jordan 4s are called this due to their bright pink colorway. The shoes feature pops of bright, punchy pink on the lacing eyelets and heel. The suede panels on the upper are a pale pink while the mesh panels are a soft cream. Inside the clear Air unit window, you can see a matching pale pink interior. These colors are complemented by a pale yellow sole and blue accents around the ankle. On the back of the shoe, a hot pink Nike logo appears on a blue background. The end result is a color palette that looks both fruity and frosty just like the name implies. As of the end of 2022, no other Jordan shoes had been released in the Guava Ice colorway.
