Back in the late 1990s, after trying out every desert bass at Sam Ash was handed this used 1993-1994 Yamaha TRB 4 string bass. Very glad I played it because the neck felt very good to me but the dead strings sounded terrible. I was into building basses at the time & had many parts. I put in bartolini pups, a heavy quick change or release bridge, a (John East) J-retro preamp & a new set of medium-light strings. (one of my favorite basses for recording for over 11 years) even better than my 1981 Alembic Stanley Clark walnut bass. I eventually bought a new Yamaha TRB bass in 2010 (with a natural wood finish) & installed a nice Sadowsky preamp. I still try recording at home recording old & new favorite songs using pro tools. Sometimes I get lucky & find songs on YouTube without the bass part & can record my own. I’ve been wanting a good 5 string bass for years but these days money is tight. The new Lakland 55-94 has been my first choice but at $4500-6000 is way out of my range. Then by accident I heard a new “Yamaha TRBX605FM 5 string Bass on YouTube playing along with a CD & thought the bass sounded very good. I listened to a few more guys playing it & decided to really check it out. Everything I heard about it was very positive. The price was under $700 so I looked on eBay for any deals…. they were all the same price?? I clicked the (wishlist) on a couple of sellers and one of them made me an offer saving me $50 dollars so I bought it. I have pretty bad RA in my fingers so the 1st thing was to replace strings with a light gauge set 40-120. That helped a lot even though I’m use to 35-95 gauge on my Status bass. While adjusting the harmonic tuning found I wanted a heavier quick change bridge that I have on all my basses. I’ve ordered a Hipshot 5-String "B" Brass Bass Bridge, BLACK - .708" (18MM) STRING SPACING… I’ve always used 19mm string spacing meaning the main drawback for me will be trying to get use to the 18mm spacing. So when it’s installed I’ll spend sometime adjusting the neck & string height… hopefully I can get it to my liking without to much fret buzz. (The neck is the key to a good or great playing instrument) Then back to recording! SO.. Until the bass is setup to my liking I can’t say much about how well it feels & plays but I’m hopeful. I’m very happy with the preamp… it’s close to the sound I’ve used in most of my recordings.Read full review
