Works well but it's a little large.
Imagine cruising along on your Sea Doo at 60 miles per hour. You decide to hop that wake from the lumbering yacht ahead of you. Only, you decide not to slow down. You hit it and land badly, and lets say your engine stops running. Now, lets say that was the only yacht in sight, and they don't stop to help you. So you pull out your three flares, pop off each one, and wait. You wait long enough for your sunscreen to wear off, and now you're getting thirsty. Well, you get the idea . . . The Mystic is a portable radio/GPS that is capable of signalling a distress call that includes your position. YOU don't even need to know where you are!!! The radio does this for you. The radio can be submerged, and yes, I've done this and it works fine. It also has a decent speaker so it sounds good. Overall it is good at being a GPS and good at being a radio. I do have a few gripes . . . First, it would be great if the radio could be operated from alkaline AA batteries. That way you could keep a set of them in your boat and not worry about charging the expensive (but decent) rechargeable pack. Second, it needs to be BRIGHT ORANGE, not black. If you drop it in the water do NOT take your eyes off of the radio! Go get it immediately or you will lose it for sure. Finally, it would be fantastic if this radio was 1/2 the size and weight. I'm sure the GPS is part of the reason for the heft, but hey, it's an electronic gizmo - they should always be working on making them smaller. Less important gripes about the GPS may not bother any of you, but here are a few . . . The GPS has no "air" mode, however it does show altitude. The auto mode just changes the display to make the roads appear more clearly, but as you drive the GPS doesn't really "keep" the car on the road. There are no true "routing" features, such as getting directions from point a to b that avoids all shoals 10 feet in the water, or what roads to drive on for land. All said, I like my radio.Read full review
Great radio! Excellent product support by Uniden.
My radio was a few years old when I obtained it, but it had been well taken care of. Hefty, heavy-duty construction. A real workhorse. But it had a problem receiving DSC messages from other radios, so I sent it in to Uniden to be repaired. They repaired the radio for $59.95, and the turn around time (including shipping) was only three weeks. They upgraded the firmware, and they also sent me a new charger cradle. Problem fixed--sends and receives DSC messages just fine now. Radio works great; GPS works great. Excellent product that keeps working over the years--and is still supported by the manufacturer. I guess if I had any complaints it would be about the short battery life if you transmit at 5 watts even a few times. It's a shame it is no longer in production.
Danger Mystic Recall
It is a great idea, a vhf radio combined with GPS. Execution is not that great. Uniden needs to get a better map source and include more detail like shoals and water depth. POI info that is standard on automobile GPS is missing too. Like the name and phone number of marinas restrurants. Also Uniden is in the midst of a recall for Mystic AC Chargers, due to overheating.
WOW! The capabilities and features are more than I expected. Really sorry Uniden stop selling them, but still offer support on them. Get one while you can. I dont think you will be sorry!
