A powerful tour de force from director Lynch!
If you were fascinated by the Twin Peaks series then you must see this movie. It is a prequel to the events in the TV series and explains and illustrates a lot of the happenings that were only alluded to or partially explained. It is much more graphic, however, so I would not recommend this movie for anyone under age 15 unless it is watched with a parent or guardian. It is probably the most graphic, and gut-wrenching depiction of incest I've seen and, in case you are wondering, manages to do this without sinking into pornography. Incestuous rape is shown for what it is - an act of terrible violence and complete betrayal. There are elements of the film that touch on the supernatural, or even psychotic, so it can be unsettling for sensitive viewers. Having mentioned all of these caveats I will close by emphasizing my belief that this movie is one of the all time greats, and is probably the masterpiece of a talented director and writer. Interesting - But it doesn't answer many questions
For Twin Peaks fans that want to know what happened after the show ended, this movie will not satisfy their curiosity, It is, in fact, a "prequel" - dealing with (but not explaining) the events leading up to Laura Palmer's death. Perhaps the most shocking thing is to have someone other than Lara Flynn Boyle play the part of Donna. Moira Kelly adequately portrays Laura's best friend Donna in the Fire Walk with Me movie, but the substitution is jarring. Fans of Sheryl Lee will not be disappointed, however, as Laura Palmer is featured much more prominently.

Not that good
A week & a half ago, I decided to rent Twin Peaks for the first time & became instantly enthralled by the quirky characters, the foreboding atmoshere and, oh yeah, the mystery of who killed Laura Palmer. My reaction wasn’t unlike most; I thought Season One was one of the most surreal tv experiences I’ve ever had and again, like most, I thought Season Two was good but could tell the wheels were starting to come off. Before watching Season Two however, I decided to read the reveiws on Netflix regarding Fire Walk With Me, wanting to know why it had such a low rating & whether or not I need watch it. Of course, I learned the secret of who killed Laura before I wanted to but the answer didn’t really surprise me for several reasons regarding his behavior during the show. Needless to say, I finished Season Two & decided to give this a try regardless of what I’d read. Unfortunately, I wish I could say I was pleasantly surprised. FWWM didn’t really shed light on anything the show hadn’t already divulged. I thought the weirdness that was sprinkled throughout the show was way too amped up here & got in the way of the storytelling. That alone was FWWM’s undoing. Like other’s have said, we really don’t get to know Laura at all here other than a crying, sexed-up, drug addict which was a shame because Sheryl Lee had charisma enough for ten actress’. And while some have said the violence & sex was pushed too far, I didn’t think it went far enough. I’ve seen more graphic sex scences on late night Cinemax. I also didn’t like was the handling of Laura’s unstanding of Bob/Leland. He had been screwing her for 3 or 4 years & she didn’t know it was Leland until the day before he killed her? Really? I liked the idea the show gave us better, that Laura knew her father was molesting her but that there was another entity at work. I wish Twin Peaks could be remade today as a FX or HBO series. Maybe they could recapture what worked the first time & avoid the traps that crippled it prematurely the second time. It’s be nice to see someone try. Read full review

Havin' a cup of Good Mornin' America!!!!!
People have the tamarity to trash or criticize this movie!?!?!. No, It wouldn't make much sense to someone outside of Twin Peaks land. But, David Lynch's crap is 10 times better than most people's so-called brilliance...and I never thought of this movie as crap. Not hardly. It adds one more bizarre guest home onto the already psychotic Twin Peaks log cabin, and no one else could do that but Mr. Lynch. No, I don't know what David Bowie's character was supposed to be...and I don't care. And Sheryl Lee's performance was staggering - let's see any number of Oscar winners play Laura Palmer and be as disturbing. The imagery and camera work alone blows 25 years of MTV away. So that's my rant, and I've got the DVD. Let's Rock....
