tiffanyw420's review of The River King by Alice Hoffman
This book was so engrossing that I read it in a single sitting – well, afternoon is more like it. I have always loved her writing style and capability to bring me right into the story. The River King was no exception. The story, which involves a private school and the township in which it is located, is actually several different stories interwoven into one. Very finely crafted tale that touches on love and friendship and trust and truths and mostly the impact of each interaction we have with others throughout life. I’m not very good at accurately expressing myself (ummm, the downside of reading so much I guess), so I’ll sum it up by saying – fantastic book for when you're in an ethereal mood.
The River King by Alice Hoffman
I decided to buy this book because I have seen the movie that was made from it several times in the last couple of months on cable. In fact, every time I see that the movie will be on, I try to watch it. So, naturally, because I'm a big reader, I wanted to read the book. I realize that some people aren't that into books, so those folks can just disregard this review, I guess, though it's probably already too late ;) At any rate, this is an excellent book, as are all of Ms. Hoffman's that I've read to date, and has many plot details that are quite different from those in the movie. I'm talking major plot details here! I highly recommend this book!
a testament to a beautiful writer
This novel is exciting in the most mythological way. With twists and turns and beautiful writing throughout the entire novel, The River King is a true testament to Alice Hoffman's abilities. I bought this novel to start off my Alice Hoffman library. Great read.
Haunting and gothic tale...
Of all the Alice Hoffman books she has written, this one has got to be one of her best (aside from Practical Magic). Hoffman has a talent for weaving magic into ordinary things and situations. Anything can happen in her tales. The River King grabs you and won't let go, long after you have read it...
This was the first Hoffman book I read. I read it for my book discussion group. I enjoyed it, but she writes a strange book blending fantsy and life.
