In 1966, when I was 13,and hated to read, the librarian invited me into the book room, where we labeled and coded books for the shelves. She said if I would read this book for a half hour a day, I could use the stereo record player in there and bring our own records in. So this was the first fantasy book I ever read...and then I was hooked forever...Lord of the Rings, Robert Heinlein, Arthur Clark, Asimov and Frank Herbert too. I'm 61 and have two grandchildren that I will read to hoping to bring them into the world of unlimited imagination! I now have a massive library covering Sci-fi, Fantasy, Theology, history and science...all because a librarian conned me into reading "ONE BOOK"! Changed my life. I'm now writing my own book about my experience with the birth of psychedelia and my experiences working for a real underground station in Houston...K.P.F.T./F.M., and playing in early psyche bands. As Bilbo warns us, "When we step out our door, we never know where we will be whisked off to!Also this copy is the exact same hardcover with the runes and maps included! I hope you get the joy it's given me, and pass it on to young people everywhere!Read full review
The Hobbit is the magnificent beginning to the now popular Lord of the Rings, Trilogy. This book should be read by anyone who loves the fantasy genre, but especially for those that have enjoyed the Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit provides, (with amazingly vivid detail) a stunning desription of Middle-Earth and some of it's history. It also introduces you to Gandolf and Bilbo and how they became friends; as well as the trecherous Golem and the story of how Bilbo came to posess "The Ring". All of this is wrapped into a fantastic adventure that really stands alone from the Lord of the Rings and yet is in my opinion crucial to set up and create the background for the Lord of the Rings. In summary; you will love this book all by itself with all it's orcs, dwarves, elves, dragon, wizard, hobbits and more. But perhaps you will take even more from it if you already have an appreciation for the Lord of the Rings. You will not be disapointed with this book wheather in hardback or in softcover.Read full review
Of all the dragon tales this one is my favorite (Anne McCaffrey included). For just a moment forget what you know of Middle Earth and the Third Age of Men. Forget the Fall of Numenor and the tales of the West. Forget Dark Lords, Rings of Power and the race of forgotten kings. This story is merely incidental to the Lord of the Rings. This story stands on its own as a great adventure epic. The resurfacing of the Ring of Power is a mere footnote in this epic treasure quest. Meet the Dwarves and journey on a greedy theives errend to plunder gold from Smaug, the last of his kind.
It had been 50+ years since I first read Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and love every physical aspect of this book which appears newly printed. I don’t find a print date, only list of copyrights from original in 1937. The dust cover in vivid green, blue & white is appealing. I particularly appreciate Tolkien’s original maps in front & back of book along several draws throughout the book. But it is the STORY which sweeps me along. This is a book to take a place of honor on my bookshelves, as I cannot afford one from the original 1937 printing
