Burt Reynolds and Dom Deluise pair up in a different kind of movie...Sonny Lawson (Burt) is diagnosed with a blood disease that will take his life eventually. Add to this family problems and the fact that Sonny hates pain, he decides to commit suicide. He wakes up in a mental institution after an unsuccessful attempt with Dom Deluise observing him. Initially one believes that Dom is a doctor but soon everyone realizes that Dom is a patient who later comes to the aid of Sonny to help him kill himself. With this scenario most will see little humor in dealing with such issues, however I found Dom to be outrageously funny in his portrayal of a mentally challenged individual. My late mother thought that Dom should have earned an Oscar for his role. I purchased this DVD because I had an old VHS copy and wanted to replace it. What I disliked about the movie, which prevented me from giving it an excellent rating, was the fact that there are sexual references and use of profanity and what could be considered "off color" language. I loved the movie! But I am sure that there are those that will see no humor in it at all because of the seriousness of the issues. I recall reading a review of Buster Keaton's movie, "The General". The film today is considered on the very best films of all time. It was given poor or at best, average reviews, because the reviewers considered that there could not be a comedy film in which death is portrayed.Read full review
I saw this movie when it was first released, and I laughed so hard I nearly soiled myself! I have been in love with this movie since I first watched it. I have spent many years trying to find this movie , and when I finally did find it, I was so happy! There is such a perfect chemistry between Burt, Sally, and Dom. Dom plays the perfect schizophrenic. I don't believe any other combination of actors could have pulled this one off. I introduced this movie to my Fiance' and her family, and they laughed as hard as I did when I saw it for the first time. This one really holds up over time. It still makes me laugh out loud every time I watch it. Makes me wonder what another movie with these three actors would be like at this stage in their lives? I just know they could pull another one off! Bottom line? I love this movie, and it remains one of my favorite comedies of all time!Read full review

I really enjoyed the movie when it was first released. I told my children that it was a great comedy and they would probably enjoy watching it. We tried to rent The End from our local video stores and it was not available. I then decided to purchase the DVD and luckily found it. I am quite pleased with my purchase I enjoyed the movie just as much as I did the first time.
