Mos Def's "The Ecstatic" is by far his best work since his 2002 album "Black on Both Sides." With juggling acting along side his music career, many have felt that he has been taking on a downward spiral with his creativity and sound musically over the past 4-5 years. Whether true or not, Mos is back with some pure hip-hop featuring his Black Star mate Talib Kweli and the legendary Slick Rick on the top two tracks of the album. This Ecstatic features melodic middle eastern samples with hard baseline's and Mos' aggressive and equally intelligent lyrics. This album is a must buy!
What makes a 61 year old white dude buy a "rap" cd? If you have heard Mos Def respond to any interviewer's questions, watched him act, or actually read any lyrics of his either solo or with Talib Kwele sp, you might get a partial answer. The rest comes from watching him and friends preform on Austin City Limits. The man has something to say and does it in a thoughtful and entertaining way. How many artists putting out music this year can say that? If you open your ears and mind to this guy, I feel you will be glad you did. thanks for reading.
don't get me wrong, i love all of Mos Def's music (especially the track he did with IT - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WA_xXWSXyFI), but this record blows away everything he's done in the past. every song flows together so perfectly (his lyrics are next level brilliant), it's got excellent cohesion, from start to finish not a bad song. i can't stop listening to it!
