THE BEST BOOK I NEVER BOUGHT : AVENGERS 1 (WHAT ABOUT 2? LET'S SEE)
It would have been ECSTATIC getting my loving hands on AV 1, but I didn't. Ebay System's Mysterious Ways set me up with this, but what I really got was issue 2: great item, great story but two steps under the Origin Source of Everything Avengers Ever. Of which I'm not telling you zip since I don't own it, so I have no right. ABOUT ISSUE 2: what's for future memory here? Not the ridicolous villain - Space Phantom, right.Suddenly Diablo doesn't look so lame anymore. Not the prolonged fight scene, bordering on the old funny films with piano for soundtrack. But the idea of an Identity Switch exposing the House Divided, dragging to light the fear and prejudices toward the Different - here the Hulk,wrong-colored, short tempered Frankestein-lookalike - by their own teammates, hence the split triggering a chain reaction into the defining events of Avengers history: the Hulk/Namor teamup,Namor's role in Captain America's return in Marvel Silver Age and from there the Zemo saga marking the Archetipal Line-up to the end in issue 15. Kirby's drawing is simple, almost sketched yet clean and powerful. Lee writes down dialogues a-la-FANTASTIC FOUR, focusing more on the character's attitude and way of thinking and reacting than on the actual threat, to the point where poor Phantom comes out and say "I'm the enemy here! See me, feel me,please stop the bickering,it's driving me insane!" And so he loses. Master strategy at work here. AV 2, as it goes for a lot of 2 issues, is insanely scarce and yet almost magically underrated. I got it for under 78$ on a sleepless night (03,30 am at my age spells murder) and it easily grades for 6 times what I payed so you're not hear me complaining. The only real string here is AVENGERS is the only main series NOT having a Golden Records reprint of issue 1. That's why I still don't have the whole 1-16 run. But I'll be working the angle. Love to all who love comics. Janisch from Turin, NW Italy.Read full review
AWESOME for the Price $$
I couldnt be more excited to geth this copy I have wanted since I was a child. It looks great even for not being rated that high at only at 3.5 but I can appreciate it is more than just that. Its a great thing and piece of history to own.
