Tracking down a film I hhad no seen for years can be a disappointment, this one is not and stands out as a classic in every way. Set in China with the Japanese launching an invasion, it is a very heartrending story of the epic journey of Grace Aylward leading a hundred children to safety -an dit is true. Ingrid Bergman puts in a marvellous performance, and Curt Jurgens plays the gritty eurasian colonel toperfection. Their romance equals Bergman and Bogart in Casablanca, doomed from the start. What I liked particularly about this film is that is was underplayed drama, which emphases it more and the sense of tragedy grows as the town is threatened. The support acting is very good. Yes, a film that should be in every collection. If the Chinese have a proverb of the 'Five Happinesses', and the Inn was the 'sixth', this film would definitely be the 'seventh.Read full review
This movie is one I remember from my childhood, and I am so honored to own it. This movie based on a true story of a missionary who was turned down because she "was not considered capable" proved them all wrong. Our world would most diffently be a better place if we were blessed to have more of people like her. One of her quotes "We are all responsible for each other". Yes this is true without question. So many lessons of so many individuals who helped he along the way and gave all they had to give including their lives. No other movie has affected me so much as this one. Truly a must have movie, if families would have their children and especially their teens watch and absorb the meaningful lessons given by a woman who with stood so many challenging obsticales and over came them with stead fast determination and the will to never give up until she succeeded in her quest to do so much good in a country that had so few to help or even cared to help their own people. I can't say enough on the greatness of this film that provides lessons the entire human race should aspire to replicate. Many thanks to all involved in making this one of the best movies ever made then and now!!!Read full review
I guess I was 8 years old when my Dad took me to see "The Inn." He, being a political and social activist in the early 50s tried to explain to me that changes in our society could be done non-violently. And so this beautiful story proceeds to let the viewer be taken in by Ingrid Bergman's charming performance....charming in the sense that she integrates herself into Mandarin society so beautifully with the goal being "freedom." THe best tale within the story is how she pushes and fights Mandarin "big wigs" (now that's classy) to stop binding the feet of women from a very early age. And, you know friends, it was the 50s, before the tumultuous 60s in the U.S., so who, of course, wins out in this splendidly photographed movie, but good old Ingrid. Old! OMG! Watching now as an elderperson, I can only imagine if Isabella Rossalini (Ingrid's daughter) had been born with blonde hair! They'd look like twins. (okay...so I get off the track)... THere are so many old movies that I want to see and to keep because of one special reason or another, perhaps each in its own right, track the person who eventually become the grown-up me. And this is one of those movies. We see so much hatred displayed off-the-screen, in 2008, still in Iraq for 8 years, the Middle-East in fire for decades now...Vietnam (so similar to Iraq). Fortunately, it was the significant influence of the young university society that finally convinced Mr. Nixon to pull out. And so the story continues. Yes, I do get off track, but this movie simply impacted how my philosophy about war and hatred are simply unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. Thank you, Ingrid.Read full review
I wasn't sure how I would like this movie; a relative recommended it, and that can either be very good or very bad! I found it to be an inspiring movie, start to finish. A lesson that God can use anyone who is willing to be used to do some pretty amazing things--no one should let anyone discourage her from doing what she feels called to do. The only drawback to this movie is that it is long--2.5 hours. But it's worth the time to watch it. A truly remarkable woman's life story.

The cast of this movie is outstanding and the plot is strong. I was a little nervous about seeing a white actor portray a Chinese character but the character portrayed by Robert Donat was so likable that I quickly forgot about this apprehension. Jurgens and Bergman were also outstanding as was Bert Kwouk. Highly recommended!
