I enjoyed this movie, it has the adventure and... historical info about Hong Kong which seemed credible since the British did control the island until 1979 when it finally reverted to Chinese rule. I found the characters and the story line enjoyable.

Unlike the mini-series “Shogun” and “...Noble House” which manage to convey some of the Grandeur and Intrigue of James Clavel’s Novels, Tai-Pan does not do justice to the written work by the same name. Of course, the movie lasts only two hours and it would be difficult to include even a fraction of all the elements found in the novel… But the viewer is left with the impression that there should be so much more! Perhaps it would have made a fine mini-series, but as a movie it leaves much to be desired. As for the acting, well… For the most part I’ve seen many of the stars do better in some of their earlier and/or later works.

Both my husband and myself have read and enjoyed the book. Movie is... fairly close to the book, would have been better portrayed in a longer version to include all characters in the book but the DVD did capture the main theme and storyline. James Cavell, the author, has written several books regarding China and Japan in a serial format, starting with King Rat, Shogun, etc. A really good series.
great movie that helps understand the re...lationship with the Chinese and England over Hong Kong slow at times but keeps you in it the whole time.
