I purchased this camcorder specifically to be used to transfer my analog Hi-8 video tapes to digital files on my computer. It was advertised that it could do this function, but it could not because it is outdated technology and my windows 7 computer would not recognize this hardware device. Plus the software disc was missing for this function, but even if I had it also was outdated technology and would not work. I purchased a separate I-Link cable and download other software in the hopes of making this video transfer to work with my computer without success. So, I had to return this camcorder back to the seller since I could not use it as intended.

I originally bought this for the purpose of digitizing old Video8 and Hi8 tapes. I have not done a complete comparison to see if there is a difference in picture quality from using an analogue capture card with a beat up camera and this unit. If the tape was messed up or the recording is bad, most playback devices won't be able to help and it'll probably need to be cleaned up in software after digitization. Using the firewire (IEEE 1394) link makes transfers from both analogue and digital tapes pretty easy. With Windows Movie Maker or Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows will popup with a transfer dialogue box; one of the options is to transfer the whole tape and this will tell the camcorder to rewind the tape to the beginning before doing the transfer. When doing multiple tapes, the power switch needs to be cycled to send an event notification to Windows after another tape is inserted; this may or may not be by design. Other transfer software, such as Lightworks doesn't care about this notification and works as normal. The unit that I bought used came with a tape that contained Digital8 footage of, I assume, the previous owners' bedroom activities. Of the little footage I played, the picture quality was on par with what I would expect from a consumer analogue camcorder from the 90's. I did not pay much attention to audio quality, however I did note that the stereo microphone was able to pick up the two subjects clearly at about 10 feet. A TV off camera at an unknown distance was also picked up, but at a lower volume. Based off of the little that I observed from the tape, I can see why the auction listing stated they "loved" this camcorder. I have not done any recordings on my own so I can't further comment on this model's recording quality or the nightshot mode. As some other reviews have pointed out, the tapes load from the bottom and the tripod mount is mere millimeters away. This makes changing tapes while mounted practically impossible. Due to the orientation of the tape loader and the location of the ports, one will either need to pick it up or position it upside down to make tape switching convenient for TV playback or doing a data transfer. I assume the purpose of this design is to make tape switching convenient while still having one's right hand in the strap. Personally I would not have the lid bear the weight of the camera when changing tapes. I have used another Sony camcorder where the tape was loaded from the top on the right side and had the hand strap adjusted so I didn't have to remove my right hand to swap the tape while still keeping the camcorder secure in normal operation. BOTTOM LINE: If you're looking to digitally transfer your Digital8, Hi8, and Video8 tapes on the cheap and are ok with the quirks, this is pretty good for = $100 when bought used. If you're looking for something to capture new and future events, I would not recommend this; technology has change so much in the past few years and there are better options that record at a higher resolution with better quality for a reasonable price.Read full review
I received this all the way from Alaska in 2 or 3 days. Fantastic. Keep in mind with my review that this camera is Obsolete. It is standard definition in an HD world. However, I needed it to put Video-8, High-8, and Digital-8 tapes on DVD and it is perfect for that. It also looked brand new, not a scratch on it. The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars on everything is because the batteries will not perform like new and the picture and sound cannot compete with modern day equipment. Of course comparing it to modern equipment is not really fair. The bottom line is the seller sold me a product that was in better condition than I expected and it arrived faster than I expected. The camcorder is great for my needs, but I will use my HD equipment for filming.
I had a Sony Handycam DCR TRV240 previously, but dropped it in an effort to grab and protect it from my grandson. It was severely damaged,so I had been looking for the exact camera for about a year.To my delight,I saw the exact model on Ebay,so I purchased it.It has all the features I enjoyed and it is the perfect size for my hand to operate.I purchased a new Samsung, but it too small and difficult to hold and operate.I have nothing negative to say about the Sony Handycam. Purchasing the item from Ebay was a wonderful experience, because I was somewhat leary about purchasing something I hadn't seen.
