The First 8Track Tape I ever heard was from Deep Purple It was not "Smoke on the Water." I hate to tell this But I found out while listening to that album that the kid We I was with Had just Shop Lifted it at a Montgomery Wards Store we had been at Earlier that day. I was buying a $29.95 .410 Shotgun. It had The Hawthorne Brand on it. I was 16 and had no problem buying it way back then. I had a Hunters Safety Card from the State of Oregon. I was sure glad I did not know what was going on behind my back as I would have probably thrown up at the time. The Next time I heard Deep Purple was at a Concert in Eugene OR. They had a Battle of the bands and Deep Purple was a featured band during this concert at the coliseum in Eugene OR. Yes I paid for my Ticket and that of a girl who wanted to go to the concert with me. She really only wanted to go with me to see the BAND. That was OK with me less than thirty days later I was playing Soldier and Jumping Out of PERFECTLY GOOD AIRPLANES.The next time I do for a fact Remember Deep Purple they were playing the Title song Smoke On The Water. With that song Cranked to the MAX Deep Purple was giving all the Executives at Pickwick International a free concert at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles CA. Pickwick was a record wholesale company. They supplied records to Sears Wards, JC.Penny's, Target, Crystal Ship's, Pay Less Drug Stores, I worked there until the early 80's and when I left they were the number one wholesale record concern in the world. With sales in the Billions of dollars every year. And albums were black about 16inches across and made out of plastic. No shiny silver disc in that day and age. Still Deep Purple had managed to make it from 8 Track To Cassette and Album now all the way full circle to CD's and as I saw ten minutes ago. They now do ads for Chrysler on TV.
