now this phone right here is probably one of the most reliable phones you could buy. it has great service, it can survive being dropped on the pavement a few times, and the only reason i bought this recent one is because i fell on my last one that was in my pocket when i slipped on some sand. this phone has great, yet simple features. it's got all the features you need like SIM card, phone number storage, color screen, and speed dial. what's great is that it also has decent web browsing and excellent speakerphone. only thing i have to say is that the battery isn't as great as i'd hope it would be. you can go like 2 days with only making about 10 minutes of calls. any more than that and you'll probably have to charge it every night if you do full days of talking. overall, this is a great phone. it is stylish and has great value. For only $36 (which is about what i paid for it on ebay) it is an awesome deal if you need a replacement phone for cheap.Read full review
The Samsung SGH-X497 focuses on what a mobile phone is supposed to do. It is a dependable, functional, rugged call maker. Here's the Scoop - 1. This is a Cingular only model. So MediaNet and such are ready to go so you can buy those ringtones and graphics and games you need. It is unlockable for use with other GSM service providers. 2. As a Tri-band model (850/1800/1900 MHz) it is ready for all of the Cingular/AT&T network in the US. Some tri-bands are 900/1800/1900 which means they won't pick up the 850 band that is frequently a part of the Cingular/AT&T network. 3. This is a loud phone. When you are on the phone you will hear what your talking partner is saying. It is a little bit tinny. You will not confuse it with the person standing next to you. It is a clean, crisp sound without a lot of bottom end. If you can live with understanding your caller but not getting the full benefit of their mp3 ringing tone you'll be fine with this. 4. Yes, your mother told you to stay out of bars but it will be difficult with this one. You'll be seeing full bars in places where other phones give you three or four. The bright tipped external antenna drags the signal kicking and screaming into your phone. This might explain why the sound quality, if not the tonal fidelity, is so good. 5. The external screen is duochrome. This low energy alternative to the 14 bit full color caller id (CLI) screen extends your battery life. It's a trade off. Do you need a full color screen to tell who is calling? If you do - move on to another phone like the Nokia 6102. If you can live with seeing the person's number on a high contrast large numbered screen then this one is for you. 6. No frills means no camera, no expandable memory, no Bluetooth, no MP3 player, no shiatsu massage every minute on longer calls. It also means it is allowed in work environments that prohibit cameras, does not use energy to power a Bluetooth radio, does not complicate the obvious. 7. The thrills are solid reception and clear transmission and receiving of voice calls. A capable browser using GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) or GSM if GPRS is not available. The ability to text or receive picture messages and an on-board instant message interface that supports AIM, ICQ and Y!Messenger. 8. Part of the reason this is a rugged phone is all the ports have integral covers. Less dirt, less moisture, less pocket fuzz get into this phone over time as a result. The wired handsfree headset plugs in near the hinge on the left side. The charger port is on the bottom and what appears to be an external antenna port is on the back. So, what's the downside? 1- The back of the phone is also part of the battery. If you scuff the back and want to renew the appearance you have to buy a new battery. Not expensive here on eBay but a nuisance at best. 2- The flip hinges are not adjustable and not metal. They are part of the phone body and, therefore, plastic. They look pretty meaty, and I've not seen any of these with broken hinges that didn't look abused in other ways but I prefer the approach of the Motorola V635. 3- The external antenna, so useful in providing that great signal tends to get caught on things. 4- Chiclet keys on the keypad - you either love them or tolerate them. This is your main interface. The tactile feedback is excellent on this keypad so they are easy to tolerate. The limited feature set allows this handset to do what it does really well.Read full review
PROS: * Nice simple and sturdy structure. * The white plastic does not scratch easily. * Has all basic functions working properly. * Vibrant color screen. * Long-lasting battery. (Once I didn't charge it for three days and the battery was still full!) * Good signals. CONS: * Does not have enough customization features (limited wallpaper, ringtones etc.) * VERY low volume (one of the main reasons I am getting rid of this phone) * Cannot vibrate and ring at the same time (very annoying...) * Metal part looks fake and cheap. In conclusion, if you are someone who wants a phone that is cheap and very simple, yet shows class, doesn't care about cameras or video captures....this is the phone for you.
Somewhere between Good and Average is this phone. Pros: Only $30.00 refurbished plus shipping and handling. Looks nice for a flip phone. Very light in your pocket or purse. Buttons easy to press. Excellent and LOUD audio volume, which is why I purchased it after reading some reviews. Works well on the T Mobile network. All or most bars light up most places. Cons: The most prominent button at the top is an Internet Explorer button. On most other phones it's a toggle or OK Enter button. My guess is that Samsung marketed the SGH-X497 for its internet services, browser and chat, so they made this button the most prominent one. But most people don't use their phones for web browsing or chat. It's difficult not to press the Internet Explorer button when you're trying to toggle for an address to call. Then you need to click twice to get out of that menu. Wastes time. Once you learn to use a small thumb motion to click on the Address toggle below and not hit the Internet button, you'll be okay. Phone has a cheap plastic feel to it, like it's a toy, but the trade off is that it's light. No digital camera in the phone. Conclusion: It's a keeper as long as you're pragmatical about your cell phones, meaning you don't need it do anything but ring, call, and text. Only $30.00 refurbished plus shipping. It's GSM unlocked, so you can choose your prepaid network. Low phone cost. Ability to go prepaid. That means you can save some money over one year, and who doesn't want to in this economy?Read full review
This is the fifth one of these phones that I've gotten for my teenage son. They are like a little brick that can send and receive text messages. If they could swim we would probably still have the first one that we got three years ago. I bought this one as a back-up for the one he's currently using because I know that this one will eventually get wet as well. If you are looking for a flip phone that is durable, functional, and small enough to fit in a pocket this is a great buy. It doesn't have all of the bells and whistles that are common with newer phones like a camera, but if you have a texter in your family this is an excellent option. If you have a kid who breaks phones often or if you work outdoors you should give this little phone a try. One other good thing about this phone is that it is a very simple design. I've been able to mix and match parts from different phones to keep at least two running at all times. I am not an electronic whiz so if I can do it many of you can as well. Used ones come up on eBay all of the time so if you keep your eyes open you can find them at very affordable prices. The only reason that I wouldn't call this an excellent phone is that it is an older model.Read full review
