Great film, hypnotizing score, which leads to thought-provoking experience.
Pi is a philosophical thriller centered around one man's journey in search of "God" in nature via mathematical patterns. It is a very deep, artsy, and interesting film driven by not only the propagandist's obsession but also a kick-ass drum-and-bass soundtrack. My only misgiving is the distracting overacting which plagues the film at times.

brilliant movie, not for the average movie-goer
This movie I originally watched shortly after it's release from the Sundance festival. This movie hits close to home since I have a love for numbers, but when I showed it to some friends, they were left wondering a few things: 1) What happens to Marcy & Lenny and their desires? 2) Is there supposed to be a link here with our way of life and should it? 3) Where's the action? Basically, this movie is for people who love movies and can appreciate artistic content within them. Who it is not for are people who are used to the big-budget blockbuster movies with sound and visual effects, lots of action, and are spoiled by hackneyed plots. It's originality lies in the black and white, overexposed style, the references to a higher being, and the lust for money. I was drawn to how my love for numbers could possibly be linked to a greater whole which so mayn people have been searching for. I was also drawn to how utterly human we all are when it comes right down to it, and the extent to which we will go to achieve our goals. Others who watched it, however, did not come to appreciate these facets. Those who thought it was "alright" eventually were left bored from lack of connection to their persons (since it was not blatantly pointed out to them like so many other films do), or they were left with the anticlimactic feeling from the ending. In short, this movie will appeal to those who search for higher meaning, those who truly enjoy mathematics, and those who enjoy an artistic representation of the human strife when confronted with impossible odds. For those who are used to having those idioms pointed out on a platter and force fed them, however, they will not appreciate the movie as much. This detraction to the masses led to the 4/5 rating, since while this movie set out to highlight certain concepts, the means by which it does this will be lost on most audience members. Pi (DVD, 1999)
Pi is a good movie that is kind of boring at the beginning. No one knows what king of pills he was taking. One can only assume that they were somekind of pills no pharmacy has. There was too many repeats. I do not see the reason why he explains 3 times about when he went blind at 6 looking at the sun. It was realistic when he put a drill to his head although the reason why he did that was not clear. He lived only because he had the numbers in his head that meant God. Was he supposed to live forever?

I know very little about math and yet I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Great Value!
This is one of my favorite movies. It is shot entirely in black and white, which gives it an eerie edge. The acting is superb and the rapid camera movements make you feel like you're there! This DVD includes several extras, including deleted scenes, a brief behind-the-scenes video, commentary from the director/lead actor and a few pages from Aronofsky's graphic novel "The book of Ants". Well worth the 5 or so dollars I paid for it. Pick up a copy for yourself...you won't be sorry

Pi is a movie about a non-religious Jew who discovers some pipe dream number in the privacy of his home. This money sucking Gadfly number, if found, will allows him to fleece every dollar from the New York Stock exchange. I purchased Pi because I imagined Pi would be like Wall Street; which is a great movie. Unlike Wall Street, which gives the viewer fascinating insight about unethical business practices that actually chop up whole companies, put thousands of people out of work and corrupt desperate stock brokers whose crime is to earn big money and live good, Pi compared to this is a lame duck. When you watch Pi, right away you'll see it's not like any other high budget movie you viewed before. I can only visualize Pi like a drug addict, high on drugs, robbing a camcorder and filming Pi. Pi is not informative, not interesting, not captivating, just not good at all. The reason Pi lacks being a good movie is its focus. Who wants to view a movie about a man who woo's a child with his quick number crunching? While the main actor schemes to find a method to own every dollar in the world, he meets up with a coffee shop Kabala brainwashed Hassidic Jew. This Hassidic Jew tries to woo this hot shot mathematician with his own brand of Bible Code number juggling. The hot shot isn't impressed but later starts leaning towards ultra-piety himself. When the Hassidic Jew learns what this non-religious Jew schemes behind closed doors, he airs it to his synagogue. Now the Grand Rabbi desires to know this secret Stock Market rip off number. Only the men in black come pretending they need the number for more sacred reasons. Left open to the viewers imagination, I suspect this corrupt religious sect wants the cashflow number so they can buttress their ego as being God's only chosen religious sect. I can only fathom them wanting a Wall Street number so they can be the only synagogue on the block having a monopoly on religion. Just think of it, if they can control the lifeblood of US commerce then their sect of Judaism can dictate to all other sects of Judaism, what religious teachings all Jews must follow and what religious teachings all Jews must reject. As for pagan religions like Christianity and Islam, these ultra-pious Jews can use the Wall Street number to crush the economies of their enemies. With this number they can perform religious genocides greater then the ones God did through Moses and Joshua. Viewing Pi I suspect this is their secret scheme for wanting a Wall Street cashflow number. They approach the non-religious Jew who hopes to vindicate his giant intellect by finding a Wall Street cashflow number, saying they need the number for the good of humanity- ultra pious humanity. After the Jews, you have non-Jewish gangsters who also seek the cashflow number for similar reasons. Unlike religious Jews, these people fire bullets first not false charm. All are after the same thing. The ability to produce unlimited cashflow to enforce their own brand of dictatorship. Pi is filled with continuous werd background music, a praise about how the hot shot mathematician was told by his mother not to look directly into the sun and how he rebelled at age 6. Pi is boring. You have to speculate on all the blanks. If you want to see a good movie about Wall Street purchase Wall Street by Oliver Stone. Take his mamma's advice-don't look into the sun or Pi. Leave Pi to High School math teachers and not Hebrew speculators. Read full review
