An excellent device and revolutionary for its time. A good purchase!
This is the "second" series of Game Boy that Nintendo released. The first one being the gray one. Nintendo released a batch of Game Boys with the "Play Out Loud" slogan. With these bold colors and wide variety of games everyone could see what you were doing. It made a point and helped Nintendo cement itself even further into American's lives. --Positives-- Perhaps the best known games for this device are the Pokemon Series which started out with Red, Blue, and later Yellow. There was the Game Boy Camera and Printer to allow you to take pictures and print them off. There were multiplayer games (required a link cable sold separately) like Tetris. The original Game Boy had an amazing lifetime that continued into the late 90's and early 00's. When it's successor came along (the GameBoy Color), not only where all of the original games compatible, but some of the Game Boy Color games were backwards compatible for the original Game Boy. The original games, were playable all the way up until the Game Boy Advanced SP. This gave gamers a huge library that didn't lock them to one machine and allowed families to provide children with games on a budget. --Negatives--- It did have some shortfalls such as requiring 4 AA batteries. The Game Boy Pocket, which came out in between that and the Color, required 2 AA batteries. The screen is in gray scale while Nintendo's competitors had color displays (Atari Lynx and Sega Game Gear) the Game Boy's battery life was significantly better. Thickness is also an issue (about twice as thick as most modern cellphones), but this too was corrected in the Game Boy Pocket. Finally, there is no back lighting. Additional accessories had to be purchased to provide any sort of additional light. There is a contrast wheel, but in the dark it won't help. --Commentary-- Personally, if I had a choice between the Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket, I'd choose the Game Boy. If it was between the Game Boy and Game Boy Color then go with the Game Boy Color. As you use this device with unclean hands (playing right after eating) you may find your keys get slower and opening the device to clean is a pain. The thickness is an issue, but it is rather durable (see the Game Boy that survived Desert Storm). The gray scale actually isn't as big as an issue as some may think. There are plenty of shades and the images generally aren't super blocky and pixelated. This device has some of my favorite portable games like Tetris, Super Mario Land series, Pokemon series, and Kirby's Dreamland series. Finally, cost needs to be addressed. Due to its age, I wouldn't pay more than $50.00 USD. I just picked one up for around $20.00 USD and I'd estimate an average between $20.00 and $30.00 USD. Read full review
