I bought this lens as a low cost, mid-range lens to supplement the 18-55mm and 55-200mm pieces that my wife already had for her camera. For the price that you can get these for, they can be a great deal. The only real draw back to it is that it will not autofocus on the entry level Nikon camera's. As is obvious by looking at the specifications, this is not a low-light lens. Nor is it's zoom range all that great. The one I bought is in absolutely mint condition, and was a steal at around $50.00. It takes gorgeous photo's, and as long as you don't expect more than it is capable of giving, it will not disappoint. The autofocus is fast and precise on my D-90, and the pictures come out sharp and free of excessive flaws. I would buy this again for general photography, or as a lens to use in conditions where I fear damage to my other, more expensive lens's.Read full review

This is an idea walking around lens. It might not take the sharpest pictures compared to the more expensive Nikon models, but the contrast/saturation is very acceptable. Although it's not a macro lens, at 80mm, you can get some very good closeup shots (eg. bugs on flowers). The hidden beauty of the lens is that it is generally an ignored and forgotten lens, and as such goes for peanuts. A down side for some may be that it's a D type lens. It will not auto focus on a camera without a body screw drive (eg. D40). I've used it on both types of cameras and didn't find the manual focusing to be a problem. Look at this this way, you get Nikon quality for $30... if you're lucky.
After a slight mixup, James Cunningham personally contacted me and helped sort out the issue and shipped my lens right away. The Lens is in wonderful condition and I am having a blast learning how to use a manual lens. I will be coming back to Roberts Camera for all of my needs.

I already use this lens on my D300 for general shooting, mostly wildflowers. I bought another to go with my D750 for the same reason. I get really sharp close ups on flowers with nice blurred backgrounds. For the price, a great deal.
