I play to a 12 handicap so do not consi...der myself a good golfer. I play Mizuno MX-23 irons and love them. I switched from Cleveland irons. I had kept my cleveland wedges 54 and 60 degree 900's. I needed a gap wedge that would help me from 100 to 110 yds out. Having read about the Mizuno wedges and how pure they felt, I bought one on ebay for $30 shipped. I have played a couple of rounds with it and have been to the range a couple more times. So far, I find the wedge to be average to good, leaning toward good, but not excellent. I am used to the pure feel of my irons. I have yet to really feel that in the wedge despite hitting the ball flush in sweet spot. I get a much better feeling from the same type strike with my Cleveland. The Mizuno, much to my surprise has a "harder" feel when struck than the Cleveland. Also, the weight of the Mizuno is heavier than the Cleveland. Not quite in the Volkey weight category which I have found to be the heaviest and don't prefer. Being such a fan of Mizuno irons, I plan to continue to play with this to see if it is a function of getting used to the wedge. But, I think it is what it is. Good, but not excellent.
But good for the average player. they say yo...u can feel forged irons better than cast, and I do agree. I don't think I'm just that good enough to tell the difference in the wedges. But Mizuno has a great reputation and they definitely do have a great club. It has a soft feel and when I hit it pure, it feels great. I just don't always hit it pure. So, I'd recommend this for a better than average player, because mis-shots really don't go so well. But for a good player, there should be few of those and more good and pure shots, which will make you love this club.
Before putting this wedge in my bag, I was u...sing a 56* Vokey Sand Wedge and a 60* Mizuno Lob Wedge. By going "in between" with the the Mizuno 58* with 10* of bounce, I am now able to add another utility club or other club, as conditions require, without losing any noticable shots or accuracy the the individual 56* and 60* offered. The feel and shot making of the Mizuno 58* with 10* of bounce feels as good or better than any other specialty wedges that I have played with. Lob shots still get-up and stop dead, sand shots still thump-out and bite, and shots from the fairway or rough feel solid without skipping (a byproduct of using a club specifically designed for sand play). I have been playing golf for over 40 years and am still around an 6-handicap and would recommend this particular club as an alternative to using multiple wedges to play the same type shots.
As most golfers know after December 31, 2010 the manufactur...ers will no longer be making wedges with deep U shaped groves, even though non-professionals can use them until 2024. Since these wedges wear out with use is important if you are a good wedge player to have a few of these. The regular golf outlets have realized this and raised prices. Ebay is the only place left where you can find deals if you search for them.
This is an amazing wedge for the avid/serious golfer. I used ...to rock the Cleavlands and Titliest's but I was getting way too much bounce on my short and long aproach shots. This club seems to be weighted perfectly and cuts through the grass like no other club. And if you find yourself around the greens in those tight lie areas this is an amazing club, no bounce when it hit's the surface so you don't get those occasional shank/blade shots from a lighter club. Hope this helps...
