I originally bought this recorder so I could burn CDs without having to keep purchasing the more expensive "for consumer" type discs which I need for my regular Yamaha CDR HD 1300. I thought being a "professional" model, I could not go wrong. The recorder does accept any CD and will initialise it. It does not make good copies, unless, you take the cover off and clean the laser and then quickly burn a disc. The bad thing about this system is that the dac and other processing components are all on two different PCBs and are attached to the base of each drive unit. It is SMD/SMT CITY! Not good for easy tinkering! I hate SMD/SMT. I know there are good things about it too...another story. The good thing about this player/recorder is that it is a pretty good player. The power supply and analogue PCBs are separate and can be modified with upgraded capacitors and op-amps. The power supply was easy to upgrade with caps and diodes. I added film caps to the base of each eletrolytic cap to "hopefully" smooth out the rectified power output. I replaced the diodes with Schottkey types. Each drive has almost it's own circuits, like op-amps, film caps just by each of the two analogue outputs. There are some parts that are shared. This is great because direct comparisons can be made using different types of op-amps, film caps brands of eletrolytic, etc. I am going to fit some discrete op-amps and see how they compare with the normal monolithic types. Considering the very good price I paid for it I am happy. While it did not become very useful for the original intention of this purchase. I decided to make lemon-aide out of lemons. Not that I actually like lemon-aide, I was able to use the player/recorder as a test bed for future electronic/hi-fi projects. So I would recommend this system to someone who enjoys tinkingering with Hi-Fi gear or if you are after a pretty reasonable player.Read full review
