I bought it for the DTV tuner; having the DVD player/recorder is a bonus. However when I first set it up, the DVD player would only play fresh disks with no scratches whatsoever. Sometimes even that wasn't good enough. Lots of times it would play the disk for a while, then stop working. I noticed that it would get fairly warm, so I rearranged the components in my cabinet to give it more air and set a small computer fan next to the intake vents. Now the DVD player works fine. I haven't tried to use any of the DVD recording features. I have two complaints and a kudo about the tuner. First there is no "previous channel" button. You have to enter the channel with the number buttons and the "dash" button (four buttons to push for most channels). This can be difficult in the dark. My other problem is it takes a while for it to change channels. Once you press all the buttons to select the channel you want, the screen turns dark grey and you wait for 1-2 seconds before it tunes in the channel you selected. This becomes frustrating when you are trying to surf channels to see if there is anything worth watching. I do like the signal strength meter. It is a bit buried in the commands, but you can watch a small picture of what you are tuned to and a signal strength bar while you rotate your antenna. This way you can tune in to the best reception.Read full review
This unit is so easy to operate for all the main features you would expect in a DVD-R unit. I bought this unit mainly for the price, as my older Panasonic unit started to malfunction. The LG unit has performed flawlessly with no issues at all. It plays DVD's and records various types of DVD-R, DVD-RW and CD'S & much much more. It also has two types of tuners built in both analog and digital. I really like it !

Hello reader. If you are thinking of buying a dvd recorder than look no further than the LG DR787T DVD Recorder, its a winner. I should know because since my first purchase of a Phillps DVD R-985 and Panasonic type, over 12 years ago, I was hooked. Ive owned over 15 diffrent models for Lite-on to Pionner and this one a very nice one, indeed. First, please feed any dvd recorder with only " Branded " blank discs. I just threw out over a hundred discs( I have over 900 discs, not including the hundreds of store bought ones) because of problems with "reading" or tring to "PLAY"them after recording on them or the quality of the discs wasn't good enough to last more than a few years. IF YOU ARE GOING TO TAKE THE TIME TO RECORD IT, DO IT RIGHT AND BUY ONLY THE NAME BRANDS ( never use House-brands, memorex or special offer ones you'll just throw them away and curse the day you payed real money for them and wasted your recording time too). I have lost entire family trips and some once in a lifetime memories...DONT BE PENNY WISE AND DISC FOOLISH. And besides, blanks are as low as 12 cents for a blank disc in a pack of 50 or so..thats cheap enough, not like $ 2.00 each when I started, over a decade ago, DONT BE CHEAP! So now on to the LG DR787T DVD Recorder, finally. This one packs a impressive punch it every category, and has one of its own super long 11 hour recording speed, wow. EDITING is very simple to " Cut OUT " scenes or commericals you don't want on the disc. You must use a DVD -RW blank disc to record on and the book its fairly simple on how to snip out the parts you dont want. You can use RAM or +rw type, but belive me, they You can use Dual Layer ( extra Long recording dvd's, however the max recording time seems to be 9 hrs, regardless of the settings) but use " the good stuff like TDK or Verbatim brand or, the disc will stop recording and ALL THE RECORDINGS ON THAT DISC WILL BE LOST..FOREVER. Be careful when using extra long discs ( Dual Layer or + DL type) just like the warning on super long VHS blank tapes, they may get unusable after a time, so be careful. I use the machine in other ways too. Like recording vinyl LP's to it. Its great because I can play 6 hours of whatever band or artists I want, better than reel to reel or cassette decks ever did. Record photos back from your digital camera in the sideshow mode and have a TRIP DISC handy whenever the mood stricks you and can be easily copied for friends and family. Speaking of recordings, just a FYI. Recently, since the home dvd market has taken a beating in sales, many dvd recorders are "Restricted" or " Copy-Protected " not to record all broadcasted tv programs. I guess its because they want to sell the show to you later, in the retail stores for more than 15 cents. If you buy a dvd recorder like the LG DR787T DVD Recorder, know first that it cant record these " Protected" shows and just stops after a few seconds of trying. This is not uncommon with machines now a days, and the LG obeys the non-recording rules too. But with that said, the LG picture and sound its great and the remote control is laid out easily to get the recording done for you. Since I have witted down by vast collection from 8 dvd recorders to just 5. The LG is almost the best one Ive ever used ( besides my combo dvr/dvd Pionner Recorder ) that can do almost anything you could ask a recorder ..A great machine and even records HD TV shows with a simple antenna or some cable systems..Most impressive. i bought this dvd recorder for primarily for its tuner capabilities. I have a 42 plasma monitor and needed a tuner. So instead of buying a cable box, this dvd recorder has a NTSC tuner built in. Not only can i record tv on to a dvd, i can also transfer old video tape (hi-8) to dvd by connecting my camera to the input connectors on the dvd. this dvd has a digital tuner as well... that's right , NTSC (analog) and ATSC (digital tuner). The digital tuner ATSC picks up digital air signals. I've had other ATSC tuners that work better ...meaning they pick up more digital stations but this one works ok on the dvd. I wasnt able to have NTSC and ATSC work at the same time, even though they state it can, since there is only one coax input...either cable or RF antenna signal. Overall for the price and quality of this dvd it's worth it. It has touch sensitive buttons on the front of the dvd that only appear when your finger barely touches the plastic plate.... pretty neat. I didnt fully thoroughly test the recording capbilities, but the unit looks great, NTSC tuner works perfect, ATSC tuner works fair, unit has HDMI out, composite, component, coax out, so it covers all the latest and old technology connectivity options out there.Read full review
although this LG DR787T dvd player and TV tuner is a 2007 model it was new, unused and in original packaging. The connectivity is HDMI and I have it connected to a dish network hopper and then to a Sony STR DH750 A/V receiver. The picture quality of the LG DVD player is great on my Sharp XR10X DLP projector at 100" diagonal (4.3) and 90" at 16.9 aspect connected to the projector with an "S" video cable as my projector does not have HDMI ports. The LG "upscales" older DVD's to 1080p and the picture is sharp and crisp. It is hard to find a new player/tuner combo these days and I am happy I found this one as left over stock and would recommend it to anyone looking for a similar unit. The only drawback is it has no function buttons on the outside so you have to use the remote for all operations except power on and channel up or down.Read full review
