Manufactured between 1966 and 1969 in Wisconsin, the 60 lawn mower has a 6 HP Tecumseh 221cc 1-cyl gasoline engine for plenty of power. Its wheelbase is 42.5 inches for stability with a 6-gear manual transmission and 4x2 2WD for easy maneuverability. Producing engines with lower emissions is standard operating procedure for U.S. manufacturers now, but John Deere began implementing an approach to cleaner air long before the U.S. government set the criteria. The company committed to protecting the environment while producing engines with greater performance and fuel economy beginning in 1967. John Deere vintage 60s produced from 1967–1969 fall into this category. The 60 lawn tractor has a 1.25 gallon (4.7 liter) fuel tank to keep you riding longer between tank fills for larger lawns and gardens. Its Tecumseh VH60 cast iron engine is an air-cooled vertical-shaft type. The Peerless 1200 transmission has belt-driven gears, six forward and two reverse. Three of the gears have high and low ranges, and the oil tank has a capacity of 1.5 quarts (1.4 liters). The John Deere 60 lawn tractor weighs 402 pounds and has a wheelbase of 42.5 inches. The total length of this riding lawn mower is 59 inches with a width of 30.7 inches and a height of 37 inches. Its original color is, of course, the John Deere green with yellow wheel rims and highlights. Use its electric and recoil start for ignition and its generously sized steering wheel for easy maneuvering. Before the 60 was produced, the John Deere 110 was the only option for riding lawn mowers. With the 60, John Deere entered the consumer market in urban locations after previously only providing high-standard tractors and farm equipment to consumers in rural locations. The 60 lawn mower is thus a scaled-down version of the 110, making it more appealing to suburban and town homeowners. This mower maintains the same lightweight fiberglass hood used by the 110 model to cover the engine and battery. It runs on one 12-volt battery with 24 amp-hours. The 60 also has a high-back steel seat that was originally covered with a slide over seat cushion for riding comfort. Attach the 60s 34-inch mid-mount rotary mower deck to the lawn tractor for a wide mowing radius. This model is specifically designed for lawn work instead of heavy-duty work handled by lawn and garden tractors. However, it is very versatile in its use with a variety of attachments beyond the mower deck available for various seasonal jobs. Use the 42-inch snow blade front attachment and 32-inch snow thrower produced by John Deere for the mower to make light work of winter snow removal from driveways and sidewalks while staying warmer under a compatible Hinter winter enclosure. The John Deere model 80 dump cart fits behind to haul dirt, wood, leaves, and debris. A pull behind sprayer and pull behind lawn sweeper also attach to the back of the tractor. Additionally, John Deere made rear wheel weights, tire chains, and hub caps to fit the 60. The John Deere 60 is also specifically designed for safety. In order to start the engine, the PTO clutch has to be disengaged and the clutch brake has to be completely depressed. This puts to rest any concerns with young children accidentally starting the lawn tractor and also helps older children and teens safely help with the yard and garden work.
