Tom Selleck, Viola Davis, Vitto Rezzo, Kohl Dussth, Stephen McHattie, all star in this film, the first of a list of great tv shows, on dvd. Tom Selleck is Jesse Stone, a washed up Homicide Detective from Long Beach, who applies for a job as Police Chief in Paradise, Massachusetts. He lands the job, but continues to drink, his rule of 2 scotches, is alittle exaggerated, as his doesnt stop. But, the former Police Chief, is killed, and Jesse, doesn't like the fact, that the former Police Chief, is a sleeping little town, was killed on his watch. Kohl DSudduth plays Suitcase Simpson, and looks upto Jesse, no small wonder why, the most experienced Cop on the 4 man police force is over qualified, for the job, in a sleepy little town...Viola Davis is supreme as the dispatcher , and Vitto Rezzo, who pthinks he should have been the Chief butts heads with Jesse, all the time. In the mean time, Stephen McHattie Shows up as the State Police Homocide detective, to alert Jesse of ev erything that is happening around in Boston., It doesnt take Jesse long,t o figure out key players, and his liasons are forming fast...watch this film, and see how versatile each actor/actress really is..Read full review

This prequel to the Jesse Stone is less enjoyable than the other three; STONE COLD, DEATH IN PARADISE and SEA CHANGE. That is, if you watch them in the order they were made. I suggest that you watch NIGHT PASSAGE before watching the other three, that way it would make more sense. It does help explain why Jesse has a drinking problem and why or how he came to leave LAPD and end up in Paradise, MASS. I did like it even though I watched it last. The series seems to have been made for Selleck to play the role, even though they were adapted from the Jesse Stone series of books by Robert B. Parker and I am sure he was not planning on Sellick to star as the title character. I hope the rumors of a 5th in the series are true, because I will be adding it to my collection.
As a retired media instructor with an expertise in film noir and great cinema I applaud Selleck for this extremely well-produced series. He is excellent as the sullen alcoholic, reminding us of the great noir anti-heros who just plod through life, barely existing. No joy in winning a case, but just another day to have to exist. Note the final scenes where he looks out over the landscape continuing to contemplate his, fate/destiny? But it's also the overall production quality, tone and mood, cinematography, and terse fresh dialogue that makes these shows terrific. The music by Jeff Beal and terrific acting and directing also go into the blend to make these shows worth watching over and over. Best thing William Devane has ever done, for example. I thought Selleck couldn't top the quality of his westerns done for TNT but this Jesse Stone series is finer than any contemporary movie, and among the very best grown-up drama you'll ever see.Read full review
The Jesse Stone series are well made movies that get to the point without a lot of unnecessary fluff. "Night Passage" introduces us to the Jesse Stone character. Fired from the LAPD for drinking on the job, he is hired as police chief in a small seaside town in Mass., which is soon found to contain a lot of corruption. Tormented by his personal problems yet knowing this is his last chance to redeem himself, he tries valiantly to do the right thing which sometimes consists of being a step away from a one man vigilante. If you are a Tom Selleck fan, you will love Jesse Stone, a flawed man with a lot of soul. There is a total of five movies with two more in the works. Based on the novels of Robert Parker. P. Castro
I read most of the Jesse Stone books before seeing this on DVD. Selleck is perfect for the past of Jesse Stone. Better yet, the supporting cast is excellent for their scripted parts. Selleck makes his character real because Stone shows his weaknesses and struggles that are probably similar in some ways to the readers' own struggles with his/her life. The humor is a bit sparse but is well placed. Just a good watch during some night at home. And it is good to see a well-made movie that doesn't deserve an "R" or "X" rating! I now have all of the Jesse Stone movies.
