Blazing Performance but a serious loss of important features
I bought this computer to replace a Thinkpad A31 for the purpose of migrating up to Win 7. Both machines are desktop replacements, and, according to a Wikipedia article, both are on the International Space Station in great number. The A31 ATI 7500 graphics card does not meet specs for Win 7, and hence is prematurely disqualified by the end of XP support. The Te61 is a Lenovo-produced variant of the earlier large IBM machines. Leaving aside the cage mounting of the screen, it is a step down in apparent ruggedness. The main loss in features, is the absence of a two-bay system for drives and batteries. It also eliminates parallel printer port, substituting extra USB ports, a firewire port, and an SD card reader. You also lose external access to the hard drive bay, which I have found invaluable. Curiously, all ports and connectors, save the fireware and one USB, are now on the sides of the computer, making for a nest of wires at each hand. The back is devoid of any connectors other than the power jack. The only way to restore the typical rear-facing arrangement is to buy the full-featured dock replicator. This gives you an extra USB port, and, significantly, a parallel port. This design seems like a compensating afterthought, but it is welcome. I cannot imagine why the design team thought a clean backside was anything but a step backwards. Keyboard and screen are excellent, but the color balance seems slightly biased toward magenta. The trackpoint behaves well, but the thumbpad pointer was hard to adopt, especially with the aspect ratio favoring horizontal movement. Performance on my machine, which maxes CPU speed and RAM, is excellent. This is only a subjective comparison with XP on the A31, and has no broader significance. In my opinion, the features dropped in going from the A31 design to the T61p outweigh the features gained by a substantial margin. The improvement is basic performance is impressive and useful, but I would stay with the A31 chassis design and build level if I could run Win 7 on it. Read full review

Even with the nVidia graphic problems it's still my favorite laptop.
The T61 series is the ultimate thinkpad in my opinion. There is however one fatal flaw due to poor quality control from nVidia* that causes all but the latest production dates to have higher than anticipated rate of failure. None the less it's still my favorite workhorse. With a fast Penryn class cpu, upto 8gb of ram, SATA2 enabled with a custom bios and an SSD to replace the harddrive you will have a blazing fast laptop for a reasonable price. *the nVidia graphic problem wasn't unique to Thinkpads, in fact the thinkpad's efficient cooling system resulted in much less graphic failures compared to other major brands from this era.
