Very well developed drama about a Marine (Robert Mitchum) who's ship gets sunk and he washes ashore on a remote Pacific island with only one inhabitant, a young Irish Catholic novitiate. Sister Angela (Deborah Kerr) is all alone since the old priest who was with her died two days earlier. All of the local people had been taken away by the Japanese. Allison is an orphan from Chicago, named for the Allison St. entrance of the orphanage, where his mother left him. He has found a home in the Marines. Afraid that the Japanese will return any day, he sets about building a raft to escape to a U.S. held island. Suddenly, a Japanese plane is overhead and the church and raft are destroyed by bombs. Mr. Allison and Sister Angela are forced to hide in a cave that Allison came across while scouting the island. The Japs do return, they come in force. Over time the obvious happens, and Mr. Allison falls in love with Sister Angela. She is very devout and is troubled by his attention and questions as to whether or not she should take her final vows. He understands that he has upset her and apologizes. He continues to protects her, and eventually American Naval forces arrive. Allison disables the Japanese guns and they are rescued. This was a great human interest movie.Read full review
This is a wonderful film with two super actors, male and female. It is amazing how you can build an almost 2 hours feature with only 2 characters, and yet there isn't a dull moment. Exciting and the moral conflict is very well managed. Not to be missed, Highly recommended.

This was my favorite actor's (Yul Brynner) favorite movie. I can see why. If you don't have tears at the end and want to follow what could have happened next--you're not breathing. This is acting at it's subtle and effective best.

The Ladies at our local senior center requested this movie as they remember it from years ago and really enjoyed it and asked me if I could get it for them. eBay made it so easy.
