A good attempt, quickly surpassed by smart phones
The Grundig G2 was an attempt to combine flash memory with a radio, and it was a good first start. While the unit is now very dated, it does do a few remarkable things. Of course the death knell for this combination was the advent of tunein, which is quickly taking shortwave stations off the air in favor of streaming. But this unit does have one very practical purpose- providing radio reception, including shortwave, in places or situations where there is no internet or cell reception. (Hint- camping in national parks.) The stereo speakers are good for their size, good signal separation. The flash memory holds 4 GB, which is pretty amazing- enough for many many songs, albums, etc. The unit has a cell phone battery, USB recharge only, but the length of charge is very good- about a week for me with 1 to 2 hours daily use. There is a micro SD slot, which I cannot get to work. The line in function works and is very handy for playing radio on a phone using tunein, then using the radio's speakers. The AM ferrite bar antenna is OK, sadly there is no provision for connecting an external AM antenna. AM night reception is not bad, able to pick up clear stations 1,000 miles away. The built in mic is pretty weak, but the unit has a jack for a real mic, and this improves the sound quality greatly. One big glitch in the manual and advertising- Grundig claims the unit can access software updates- there are none. The unit is out of production. In the final view, this unit is excellent for people who go off grid a lot and need access to news.Read full review
