I use my Dakota 10 to mark my deer stands. I always know where they are but having so many out in the woods some are hard to find in the dark. The Dakota 10 will take me right to the tree. I think the battery life is a little short, and I don't believe I get the 20 hours they say you should get. Fairly easy to use you just need to play with it some. It really is a great value.
The Garmin Dakota 10 is one of my favorite GPS receivers. It is very accurate, dependable, easy to use, and has all the features I look for in a paperless geocaching GPS. It is also the cheapest machine you can buy for displaying topographic and satellite images, which gives you so much information about your whereabouts. It is also small, with a touch screen that is easy to use by small hands. Finally, the batteries seem to last forever, but I know they are good for about 20 hours. Dislikes? The only thing that can be annoying is the dull screen in bright light. But that can be avoided by adjusting the way you view the screen against the sun. All in all, a very good all around GPS receiver for outdoor use!
Though the title says Dakota 10, it was a Dakota 20 I purchased. I purchased used off ebay with receipts showing it not even a month old. Other than using GPS's in smart phones and the like, I don't have a lot of experience with necc. features. I did a fair amount of research and based on reviews like this one, features and pricing, I went with the Dakota 20 GPS unit. The unit is small enough to put in your pocket, it's waterproof and easy to read. The menu is simple enough that you don't need a 30 page manual to read prior to firing it up the first time. Satellites are picked up within a minute at the most and holds on to them very well. I don't remember the standard amount of distance that is acceptable from being on target but I can tell you that this unit will get me 30-40 feet from where I started. It has a lot of features like being able to trackback if you are in the woods. Definitely worth the money if I hadn't bought it used.Read full review
I was initially surprised it was a little smaller than I had thought because I didn't look at the actual dimensions but so far so good I'm pretty impressed for those of you that have used GPS before it picked up my location inside my house I'm getting ready to use it for a couple weekends pretty deep in the woods so I'll write more once I use it out there

So far the Dakota 10 is everything I hoped for. I am a big fan of geocaching and being a paperless unit, Great. I think the thing that sets off the Garmin from others is Battery life. I actually bought a different brand and it works great for caching and it is paperless, but it doesn't have the battery life and some of the features that the Dakota has. I bought the Dakota 10 refurbished for half the cost and works great. Unbelievable amount of features and more than I'll ever need. Thanks Garmin, Great unit.
