The USB version of this GPS receiver is the usual high quality of a Garmin unit, but it does connect to a computer in an unexpected way, so be careful when buying this unit. Most "hockey puck" USB GPS receivers create a COM port on the computer, which makes them very compatible with mapping programs and other GPS software applications. The Garmin 18 USB creates a new DEVICE in the Windows Device Manager and does not generate a COM port for your use. When that happens to you and you get frustrated and disappointed, just go to GPSGATE.COM for an inexpensive software package that will solve the problem. Garmin does have a COM port creator program called Spanner, but it does not work with Vista or Windows 7. Caveat Emptor!
This is not a haldheld but for use in a car or other vehicle. Works perfectly. Drove all around in Florida using this. The fault with using a laptop as a navigational tool is that it is a fraction slower than the dedicated units so when the computer says 100 meters to next turn you have managed to drive a large part of that distance Baldur
I do like the large screen my laptop provides for navigation. the small screened navigators are a hazard to me. Other than having to deal with Garmin, their customer service is as bad as it comes, the product does what it is advertised. It locks on to the sats fast and acurately.
I have an older model GPS 18, this was a much newer model. It was very easy to install on my laptop and works well.
It works great. I use it every day at work to help me know the roads. i hope i dont have to but i would buy it again
