I purchased "For the Love of Strange Medicine" by Steve Perry because my father is a HUGE fan of Journey. Each year when they tour in North Carolina, I find myself standing next to him in the crowds. We often leave these concerts with our voices nearly gone and our spirits as high as they could ever be. Because Steve Perry decided to split from the group, my dad wanted to listen to his solo album. I bought this for him for Christmas and the look on his face was priceless when he opened it! He immediately popped it into the CD player and played air guitar! This CD was definitely a highlight of our Holiday.
This is an excellent collection of lyrics and melodies from a master, and they're simply beautiful. Some are haunting, as in "Missing You"---which I do not think was written for or about former girlfriend Sherrie, that was decades ago! It's from a man who knows he's made mistakes and the price he's had to pay for them. "Anyway" is similar, clearly an attempt to put past misdeeds behind and remember the magic---and, at their peak, Journey was magic. Everyone in the audience at their concerts knew all the words and sang along, something Steve Perry, as front man for the band, enthusiastically encouraged. And when he was enchanting us with something like the unforgettable "Open Arms" or "Send Her My Love", "Faithfully"---the crowd became quiet and just watched as the power and clarity of that voice enthralled us. It's sad that the night could not go on forever, but "the party" ain't over, as this effort proves. Let's have more, more, and more! Steve's fan JanRead full review
Steve Perry, former frontman for Journey during their peak days, CAN DELIVER! This was his second solo CD that he backed with a tour. Here's a listing of the songs: You Better Wait Young Hearts Forever I Am Stand Up (Before It's Too Late) For the Love of Strange Medicine Donna Please Listen to Your Heart Tuesday Heartache Missing You Somewhere There's Hope Anyway My particular favorites are "I Am," "Anyway," and "Missing You." I really love his ballads though and these three are. "Anyway" is written about his feelings about the band Journey and their parting. "Missing You" was written about the loss of his relationship with Sherrie (for whom he also wrote "Oh, Sherrie"). "You Better Wait" is a lively, rocking tune, as is "Listen to Your Heart." If you love the sound of classic Journey or Steve Perry, I don't think you would be disappointed with this CD at all. I love it!!Read full review
