I discovered Doc Martin by accident and became hooked after seeing just a few of the later episodes on public tv. I came to eBay to find the series cheap. Too early, no cheap bargains yet. So I bought anyway, and I certainly don't regret it. Of course, everybody has a different idea of what is enjoyable. If you like Doc Martin, you won't be disappointed by seeing the whole series. I laugh so hard I almost cry sometimes. This stoic character makes Star Trek's Mr. Spock look like a recreation director. A top London surgeon who became sick at the sight of blood (and they play that theme well many times), he is now the village doctor charged with caring for a quaint village, with no tolerance whatsoever for nonsense. He's a medical genius, saving lives and curing illness with no social grace whatsoever. (Caller: "I'm dying". Doc: "You better be".) They don't dwell on it, he just spots symptoms or is called to an emergency, he works miracles, sometimes with only what little is at hand, then they move on instead of dragging each little thing out for ages. The series is a love story, but certainly not the cloying mushy type, and most of the story is not about the two of them together. He is equally curt with the whole village he's caring for. You can tell there is love under there somewhere, but he and Louisa can unfortunately barely tolerate each other. The first kiss eventually happens, and if you haven't split your sides laughing yet, you will at this point. I know from the episodes I saw before where this is roughly all headed somewhat, but I'm almost through series 4, which is something like 30+ episodes, and I've seen probably two or three kisses. Memorable kisses, not for the passion but for his inept verbal responses (technical medical observations), which don't help the progress of the relationship. This is all done so seriously, not like stupid slapstick, but it's outrageously funny the way a fine gentleman doctor with no bedside manner and precious little in the way of visible emotions proceeds through a relationship, or more accurately, has this relationship going on in spite of him. I don't like soap operas, and this story line has some of the earmarks, but the characters are all believable people. None of the deep drama and nasty intrigue of a common soap, just village life with a cast that you will love, and funny beyond words in spite of how serious he is. The setting makes me want to move there, not for grandiose vistas, but for the peace of a simple seaside village and countryside. One of the best movie bargains I ever bought, even if I did pay handsomely. I also bought series 6, not part of this package. The movies included with this series are not directly related, not part of the story of the series. One is good, the other not, I won't be watching it again. The series, I will probably wear out the disks. Highly recommended. My biggest problem is trying to ration myself to only one or two episodes when I pick an evening for the Doc.Read full review
Great characters, wonderful scripts, very entertaining in a slow-paced, very picturesque environment. The backdrop of the hilly town on the sea, with old stone houses and seaside cliffs, add to the pleasure of the experience. If you liked Northern Exposure you will love this. Enjoy!

Loved them all. The movie was not as I expected. It was still Doc Martin, but not the same story line and characters. Still would have bought it though as part of a pacakage out of curiosity. Can't remember if it was the first movie or the second movie that should have been rated as X because of a sex xcene which did not need to be totally explicit. Glad they changed his story line for the series. It is a much better story line.

Leave it to the Brits to come up with quality productions, great cast, non-vulgar script, not trivializing women, providing super 'escapism' settings, and fine acting. The productions really do become addictive as the label says. HR

Simply one of the best series I've ever seen!,and of course it's put out by the BBC.It's seriously funny, and everyone of the actors is fantastic!,usually in a successful series there's just a couple of good actors, and everyone else makes guest appearances.Amazon is still charging to watch it on Prime, even though it's been around for many years, because it's so wildly popular! You won't be dissapointed if you buy this, and I rarely get committed to a series!
