This is based on actual historic f...act. The part you are not told, is that the participants were REALLY tasked to do radio direction finding (RDF) bearings on Japanese shipping - so that the ships could be targeted by the US Navy. RDF was a new and classified art at the time, hence it was omitted from the script of the movie. The personnel stationed in the Gobi desert [hundreds of miles from anywhere], DID provide weather information, but that was secondary (at best) information. The RDF "cuts" - bearing information, as it is called, was relayed to the US via HF (shortwave) radio. It was received by a commercial shipping company on the US west coast, and then relayed to Washington, D.C. - to the Navy Dept. The commercial company was NOT told where the other radio station was located, because everyone was convinced that, if they knew they were thousands of miles away, they would 'stop listening' for them, being convinced that they couldn't hear them if they were that far away.
