I wanted something with a modern-era i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 1080 screen. This fit the bill. While the Ivy Bridge processors are now 4 generations old, no large performance jumps have come in any of the new designs. Even though the i5 is older and lower clock speed than most, this laptop still has enough power to serve as a replacement for my workstation desktop, if it had to. Battery life is good. The standard battery comes in two sizes, and I have the larger one. My typical battery life is around 5 hours, doing a simultaneous mix of software development, web browsing, and word processing. I have installed a SSD in place of the factory mechanical hard drive, which may have improved battery life. Since this is a common laptop model, new or extra replacement batteries are very inexpensive and you can buy them here on ebay. This laptop is a business model, and so it has a few features that aren't necessary to a personal user - ExpressCard slot, DVD drive, VGA port, etc - which adds to the overall thickness. At 1.3" thick when closed, It is not a slim laptop. But because it is a business model, it is also very easy to work on. An easy to remove hatch provides access to the RAM, hard drive, WLAN card, and much more. The owners manual provides complete teardown instructions.Read full review

It's a good basic entry level laptop, but the i3 with Intel graphics and only 4GB of ram and a spinning HDD the E5530 bogs down at times. This same laptop with an i5, 8GB of ram, and an SSD would be a much better choice in my opinion.
